Most people have heard of the tragic shoting that happened on December 14, in Newtown, Connecticut. A depressed and insane gunman walked into Sandy Hooks Elementary and opened fire on children and teachers. He took the life of twenty-six innocent civilians before turning his gun on himself. Because of the shooting, gun control laws have been the center of political debate inside of the U.S. Most attention is focused on the United States proposed gun control laws announced yesterday by president Barack Obama. Of the many policies being demanded by anti-gun advocates, very few were approved yesterday. Of the few things that happened, President Obama passed a total of twenty-three excutive orders strengthening existing gun laws. These executive orders, which don’t need approval from congress, take effect immedeatly. However, many of the tougher laws sought by gun control advocates were not passed because they required approval from congress. Congress has not yet taken up the legislation and it is unclear whether any legislation will be passed. Democrates are now aiming to make new gun control policys to reduce gun violence. Democrates are normally in favor of gun control legislation which includes measures such as background checks on all gun sales, bans on military style assault weapons, and limits on high- capacity magazines. On the opposing side, Republicans believe that nothing the president is proposing would have prevented the massacre at Sandy Hook. They also claim the President is targeting the Second Amendment rights of the people instead of seriously addressing the underlying causes of such violence. Although there appears to be considerable momentum behind new gun control laws, it is important to remember that the U.S has a well established “gun culture” where a large majority of Americans support gun ownership and the constitution guarantees the individual right to bear arms.
