Proposal: Secure Fiber Optic Network

Fiber optic networks are considered to be considerably more secure than copper media networks. This paper will be describing the use of fiber optics and optical networking to achieve increased network security. A brief description of light and its fundamental characteristics will be given since that is the source used to transmit through the fiber cabling. The characteristics of fiber optic cable and its manufacturing processes will be described, as will the components that the cabling connects to in order to operate, like Lasers, amplifiers and receivers. The tamper resistant nature of optical cable will be contrasted to the ease of tapping copper cables. This discussion will include the encoding process and wavelength division multiplexing and their developments and advancement.

Annotated Bibliography

Cladis, Chris P., and Mitch Frishman. "The Force of Fiber." Security Management October 1990: 77.

This text addresses fiber and its non-susceptibility to different form of interference like EMI/ EMC and other forms of electronic monitoring. This is of particular interest with regard to line tapping and packet sniffing.

Dense Wavelength-division Multiplexing." www.fiber-optics.info. 2005. Force Incorporated. 11 Nov 2007 .

This is an excellent source on high bandwidth fiber. It gives an excellent explanation of the use of different wavelength lasers sharing the same cable.

Gahwhiler, Jacob. Secure Electronic Communication Engineering. San Mateo, California: Morgan Kauffman, 2004.

Excellent text on tapping and countermeasures. Includes a great deal of historic military and espionage material.
