Same Sex Marriage|
Yea or Nay|
"By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you wife and wife." What? Marriage was originally a sacred bond between a man and woman, but today’s definition of marriage is being redefined state by state. Twenty years ago, it would have been absurd to talk about same sex marriages, but lately politicians have passed legislation for same sex marriage in six states. “In 2012, the legislatures in MD, NJ, and WA passed freedom to marry bills that have not yet taken effect,” (States). Although there are many people that are strongly against gay marriage, this new generation of voters and legislators are growing acceptable to same sex marriage. Is same sex marriage morally wrong, or should it be a divine right that the people choose?
“If everything is marriage then nothing is marriage.” (Benigno Blanco) Some things should never change and traditions should be valued. Although we have come a long way as a society, allowing same sex marriage is not the type of change needed. First off, it devalues a traditional marriage and it also promotes homosexuality more than it already has in the media. “First, though, let’s be clear about what this issue is not about. This issue is not about whether homosexuals are equal citizens who deserve to be treated with dignity. They are, and they do. The issue is about the public purpose of marriage. And, if that public purpose of marriage has served us well, can it—or should it—accommodate the desires of those espousing same-sex marriage and same-sex families as the social equivalent of natural marriage?” (Randy Hicks) Homosexuals have the same rights as everyone else, but to put their relationships on the same pedestal as a natural marriage is not only morally wrong but it is also unethical. Since the earliest civilizations, marriage has only been respected between a man and a woman. “Humanity knows many different forms of relationships: close friendships, cousins, aunts and uncles, and nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters. Why is it that every society throughout human history has favored the relationship between a man and a woman who commit to one another? And why is it that this unique relationship is called “marriage,” and nothing else is?” (Randy Hicks) If two men or two women were meant to marry then they would be able to reproduce. Same sex marriage defeats the purpose of sex and marriage. When two people come together in holy matrimony, this is supposed to be the start of a new life together, a new family. If homosexuals are allowed to marry then next they will want to adopt children. This ignites a new problem that homosexual marriages would cause.
What type of message does this send to our upcoming generations? “Of all the arguments against same-sex marriage, the most immediately compelling is that it hurts children. If children have a right to anything, it is to begin life with a mother and father. Death, divorce, abandonment, a single-parent’s mistakes – any one of these deprives children of a mother or father. But only same-sex marriage would legally ensure children are deprived from birth of either a mother or a father.” (Dennis Prager) Male influence as well as female influence is essential to a child's growth development. There are some things that parents teach children by setting an example. How do two homosexual men teach a young boy about sex without influencing his mind? Same sex marriages would increase the number of homosexual children, which would then increase bullying in school. The effect of this could be an increase in childhood suicide. This may seem like a vague assumption but the facts are there. “According to recent gay bullying statistics, gay and lesbian teens are two to three times as more likely to commit teen suicide than other youths. About 30 percent of all completed suicides have been related to sexual identity crisis. Students who also fall...
