The Sailor Moon Series
The Sailor Moon Series
“Japan is very popular for their great magna.” Indeed, Japan is the most famous place for magna. One of the very beloved magna is called Sailor Moon (Bishōjo Senshi Sērā Mūn originally translated into Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon). Most people that have seen the anime and read the magna declare that Sailor Moon is one of their favorite anime ever. This is probably due to the fact that Sailor Moon is funny, has a lot of action, and is romantic at the same time. As a matter of fact, Sailor Moon is very funny. Of all the characters in the series, I would say the Inner Senshi (including Sailor Moon, Sailor Chibi Moon, Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter, and Sailor Venus) are the most hilarious ones, because they’re still teens and are “enjoying” youth at the maximum. With their unique personalities, they make a great combo all together. In fact, Sailor Moon deals with a lot of action. A girl named Usagi Tsukino (translated into Serena Tsukino) that meets a talking cat named Luna. Luna tells her that she is destined to be a sailor senshi and that she must fight against evil, find the other Sailor Senshi, and meanwhile find the Princess of the Moon Kingdom (The Silver Millennium). After that, she transforms into Sailor Moon and finds the other senshi (sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter, and Sailor Venus, along with the other talking cat, Artemis) and to their surprise the Moon Princess was Usagi all along! If truth be told, although it deals with action, Sailor Moon also has a lot of romance. For example, Prince Endymion (the Prince of the Earth) and Princess Serenity’s love

was forbidden, for Earth and the Moon Kingdom could not be together. And still love between them grew and they saw each other secretly. Even when the Moon Kingdom was destroyed, Queen Serenity (mother of Princess Serenity) used her remaining power to send all the Moon Kingdom people to Earth where she hoped they had happy lives. They all reincarnated into

In The Secret Life of Bees, Sue Monk Kidd alludes to the first lunar landing to communicate that the mystery of the moon is more intriguing than its discovery. For example, August explains her distress when she hears of Ranger 7’s mission to the moon: “‘Now it won’t ever be the same, not after they’ve landed up there and walked around on her [the moon]. She’ll be just one more big science project’” (114). August further explains that the moon is fascinating because of its ambiguity, and now that humans have access to it, the moon’s mystery is uncovered. Thus, the reality of scientific discoveries replaces the mystical beauty that the previously untouched moon once held. On July 31, 1964, Ranger 7 lands on the moon and sends pictures back to…

Sailormoon, the world renowned animated series, comes from the Japanese Shōjo manga, written and illustrated by female author Naoko Takeuchi. The main distinguishing feature of Shōjo manga is that it is specifically aimed at young female viewers and involves some form of (usually magical) female protagonist (Saito 143). Kumiko Saito, in her essay on Magical Girl Anime and the Challenges of Changing Gender Identities in Japanese Society, acknowledges that the Shōjo genre exhibits “various possibilities of power for both men and women”; however, she argues that these potentials are marginalized by “contradictory messages conveyed by metaphors of magic and transformation” (162). In this essay, I will explain the ways in which the internationally…

In Europe, women were responsible for certain activities and were also treated with respect, while in Japan, they were entirely serving men. The European women were expected to stay home and be trained in household chores, such as farming or sewing, and they didn’t have an option to chose who they want to marry. On the other hand, the Japanese women held a more equal status as Japanese men. For example, the Japanese women were allowed to inherit part of their family’s estate and some women even became Samurais. The use of a feudal system in Japan affected their women by becoming more equal, while in Europe, they were only valued for their work and what they did. Women enjoyed a higher role and status in Japan at the time, due to the feudal…

Feudal Japan’s view on women was much greater than feudal Europe’s view on women. Which is what makes this aspect of life between the two so much more different than it is similar. What surprises me about Japan is that their perspective on women is very unlikely, compared to pretty much the rest of the world. Typically almost every country in this time saw women as nearly nothing, like household slaves. Japan sees their women as strong, powerful, fierce warriors. This is what makes them extremely different from feudal Europe. The west didn’t see their women as tough; they saw women like fragile, small, weak and delicate. Europe had really no faith in them at all. This aspect of life really emphasizes how much different these two are from each other. I believe that each of their perspectives on women is a part of their culture. Europe’s women and Japan’s women are most likely physically identical when comparing strength and power, but since the east and west cultures have opposite perspectives, they are much different to them.…

Over the course of the past 80 years we have seen major growth in the company of Disney and the way it presents itself to the rest of the world. One of the many ways Disney presents itself is by the animated films they produce, more specifically, the princess films, that we all know and love. In this paper, I will explore the role and functions of the Disney princesses over the past 80 years and discuss their differences. In particular, the femme fatales we see when Walt Disney was in charge, and how it is the princess rather than the hero who becomes the central figure in these films. On the other side, I will look at Team Disney and how they turn the princesses from damsels to more democratic.…

In the beginning there was chaos and Orana, the goddess of the sun, was born. She is the ruler who formulated what is now known as the core of the earth. She gathered many stars and crushed them together to create a glowing rock-like sphere. Orana then decided to have the core revolve around her so she could watch her creation. While doing this she ran into Lunasta, god of the moon. Lunasta moved the moon to have it revolve around the core too. So instead Orana and Lunasta decided to put the sun and the moon right next to each other. After a while one of the stars pinched Lunasta and gave him the idea to have a child with the sun goddess and add onto the core. They had three children together; Tierrana goddess of the land, Aguanta god of the water, and Vientino god of the wind. Lunasta did not want his children taking over his domain in the sky so he squished them together and threw them on the rock core. Tierrana took up half the core and Aguanta took up the other half. Vientino became stretched out over the entire core, on top of his siblings.…

I am going to be writing about the lifetime television show, " The Golden Girls". There are many different episodes and I have probably seen them all, at least twice. I first started watching the show with my mom. My curfew when I was in high school was 11:00 or 11:30. While I was going into detail about the many things that had happened that night, "The Golden Girls" would be on. At first I did not enjoy them, but as I got to know the characters I was addicted.…

    I. Legend has it that at the beginning of time, Gods met in a city to plan the creation of the universe. One of the mighty Gods was chosen to serve as the sun while another frail God had to serve as the moon. During the ceremony, the great God refrained from throwing himself into the bonfire as he was afraid. That is when the weak God stepped forward and threw himself instead. Embarrassed by his inferior’s bravery, the great God threw himself in as well. Eventually, two suns emerged rising towards the sky. The other Gods angry with the great God’s hasty actions, decided to dim his light. Thus, changing the great God into the moon, condemned forever to follow the sun.…
