Safe Schools – How bullying and weapons create violence and how we can resolve these issues for our children to be safe.
How safe did you feel when you went to school? When I went to school I was not personally influenced by drugs, alcohol or weapons. Personally, peer pressure was more of a concern. Criticism, of what people wore to school and what kind of car they drove was more of an issue during my school years. But when it came down to getting a ride somewhere opposed to walking, the pressure dropped because they did not want to walk. Hair-do and clothes were the “hip thing”. Spending time at the mall and going to the movies or skating was the weekend trend along with high school games such as football and basketball. That was in the eighties that I grew up and times have sure changed. Being a parent in this twentieth century can be scary for some. As a parent myself, I have always kept close attention to what my children are involved in and address every issue that may come about with them. The involvement in their school environment and personal involvements with other children is most important to me as a parent. Violence is not anymore just calling names and punching someone, it has increased to bullying and the use of weapons, among other more serious crimes among students.
Safe schools are not just pinpointed to a certain grade level, they affect elementary to high school levels. My discussion is on the statistics found of how bullying and weapons create violence in our school systems. These children have influences such as peer pressure from other children to home life as how they are treated. The chart results (Table 7.2) show how children have been evualuated by being bullied and how the use of weapons makes the children not feel safe.
