CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

Nowadays innovation is almost everywhere. As technology grows fast, certain advancements are being developed to make our work much easier and more accurate. This advancement of computer has been a great factor in our daily living. Today, computer is one of the main reasons why almost everything becomes simple and easy from difficult and complicated job and almost everything now is being operated and managed through computers. It is widely recognized that most companies need computer system in order to survive and succeed in the competitive business environment. However, there are still companies who are still using manual based system which is tedious and time consuming. The success of a company does not only depend on the system that they are using but the dedication of the employees as well. It is very important the presence of employees in a company. Today, regular attendance is an important factor in success (Rothman, 2001). It is considered that attendance is a vital factor in any working environment. It is very important to track the working hours to monitor the time in and out of an employee as well as for computing wages. Every business has own system or ways to monitor the attendance. An attendance monitoring system serves as a time log that is set up as a computerized database. It maintains daily record of an employee’s arrival and departure in a company. Most commonly used to monitor the attendance is the Access Control System. Norman Thomas cited in Electronic Access Control, Access Control System is digital networks that control access to security portals. It can take any forms like proximity cards, smart cards, and biometrics and even with use of keypad. All Access Control System, whether if it’s electronic or manual, use the same concept which is to authorize user to log in and out with the use of proximity cards or any devices. It shows that with the advancement of the technology, we can use these options to time in and out with an accurate data recording. This kind of system can also be implemented especially if the management want to monitor the attendance of the students. RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is the use of a wireless non-contact system that uses radio-frequency electromagnetic fields to transfer data from a tag attached to an object, for the purposes of automatic identification and tracking device. With the use of RFID, it can record the time of an employee and it will be automatically saved in the database. Nowadays, it is widely used even other countries are using this computerized system. Douglas Bergen’s “Swipe K12 School Solutions”, the school will implement the swipe k12 system to record and monitor the attendance of the students. The students need to swipe their cards to create an electronic attendance record. Even in Texas there is also an article that used same concept but different device. Tiffany Kaiser cited in “RFID Tag Trial for Student Attendance”, students in San Antonio Texas will use Radio Frequency Identification System (RFID) by 2013 to track some of its students. This type of card enables the management of the school to track the location of the holder. The management of the school also indicated that students will only be tracked while they are within the school vicinity and only authorize officials will have the access to RFID information.

Through the study of this employee attendance system with the used of RFID, the problems regarding difficulty in monitoring attendance will be resolved as well as creating accurate reports when it comes to time of employees. This system would avoid buddy stamping and data will be stored in database. It will also provide security for the possibility loss of data.
