Rural Development

Rural Development in essence a multifacet subject is a problem causing serious concern
especially to developing countries at all stages of development. While it is true that
India, the second most populous (626 million—mid 1977), has become the seventh
most industrialized nation in the world, efforts to better the economic conditions of
80 per cent of rural population have met only a partial success.

After many years of
experimenting with industrialization as a cure for the problems of developing countries
the disenchantment with policies aimed primarily at growth in output led to searching
analysis and changing strategies. The green revolution, on which many hopes were
pinned proved in fact to be a red revolution resulting in accentuating the imbalances
between the bigger and the small land-holders

generic terms rural development is taken to refer to "strategies, policies and
programmes for the development of rural areas for the betterment of the rural poor".

building of die social and economic infrastructure with the ultimate aim of achieving a fuller utilization of
available physical and human resources.

The District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) has traditionally been the principal organ at the District level to oversee the implementation of different anti-poverty programmes. Since its inception,
the administrative costs of the DRDAs were met by way of setting apart a share of the allocations for each programme.

The DRDAs will maintain their separate identity but will function under the chairmanship of the Chairman of Zill Parishad.
