Evaluation of “Ruined”

“Ruined” is a play about ruined women in a bar during the civil war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo. The actress who plays Mama does a very good job. Her loud volume, high or low pitch, and voice qualities make a great contribution to her play.
First her volume is loud that all of the audiences can hear her voice. The role she plays is called Mama who owns a bar. She needs a loud volume to get everybody’s attention in the bar. Her loudness makes her stronger and more powerful. When the husband sticks to find his wife in the bar, Mama yelled loudly to drive him away.
Second, her pitch switches, which make her an avaricious bar owner, and also a tender mother. When she knows Sophie is a ruined girl who may have bad influence to her business, her pitch lifts very high in a sudden to show her astonishment and anger. However, when she shares the chocolate with Sophie, her pitch is low which makes her like a tender mother.
Third, her vocal qualities are different to meet the needs in different situations. When the lieutenant threats her by putting his gun under her throat, her voice is trembling and hoarse which shows her fear. She tells Christian that she is ruined with a tearful yelling, which conveys a message that she is deeply hurt.
In conclusion, I think she is a wonderful player. The three aspects—loudness, different pitches and the voice qualities—make Mama a woman who has different aspects, and make her play

While sappy and slow hits are the usual characteristics of a Carrie Underwood song, she changes her style with a more optimistic tune. It opens with an upbeat rhythm on the keyboard. Then, a bluesy beat is introduced with the sounds of a guitar, violin, and drum set. The tune fades lower to stress the importance of the lyrics when she begins to sing. She uses variations of medium and low pitches to show off her perfect country vocals. She begins with a low and sassy voice, but shifts to a more medium tone at times. While she starts the chorus, the music gets louder and an arrogant attitude is heard through her voice. The music is also very joyful because she resolves the situation in her own terms. This angry, yet cheerful, melody is very different from what Underwood's fans are used to hearing.…

Mama is one character that had great acting qualities. She was the typical grandmother in both the play and the movie. She carried all the right qualities in her acting. In the movie she was dressed appropriately as a grandmother wearing a dress, an apron, a hat with a flower on it, and her hair tied up “old timey”. She was a somewhat large framed woman and had all of the traits one would think of when thinking of a grandmother at this time. Not only did Mama’s appearance fit the description, so did her voice; literally and symbolically. She had her heart in place for the good of the family, especially Travis. Mama also spoke from wisdom and the heart. She had been through a lot throughout her life and not only spoke from the heart but, acted from the heart. Mama presented herself in a “grandmotherly” way by acting from the heart and portrayed the true actions of a grandmother, just as she was depicted in the play.…

little power and she is shown to have no control. She uses her beauty as a strength. This situation foreshadows her death because of her flirtatious sense of personality; she was purposely flirting with Lennie and he was not stable enough to handle this. Her mother makes the situation worse by telling her that she couldn’t be an actress this brings down her self-esteem making her believe that she could never amount to anything making her the way she was.…

The mother, played by Alex Jarvis, opened the show by entering singing “Amazing Grace” acapella and creating a soothing environment for not only the actors but the audience members as well. Throughout the performance, she would enter the stage and watch over Buddy and his sister Jennie Mae, played by Merritt Tressler, when they were in situations that affected their lives. Kaylin made sure to place Buddy’s mother onstage when Buddy needed a hand, or when Jenny Mae was experiencing feelings that she’d never felt before. The direction of this character was very well done and I applaud the interpretation that Kaylin White brought to the table.…

Mama has stuck to her same values ever since she was a child. She is the oldest women in the apartment, and is the wisest. She controls the household at the beginning of the play but then hands her control down to Walter by giving him the rest of the insurance money. Mama is stuck to the values of blacks from when they were slaves back in the last 1800's. She is a woman who will never change those values, because she grew up with those values. She is a catholic woman with strict values in the household. It seems that when she was born, she may have been born a slave or the slaves were getting emancipated around that time. This upbringing causes her to have a very strict attitude in the play. When Beneatha says "there is no god" mama slapped beneatha and made her say "In my mother's house there is still God." This shows Mama's control on her kids and the household.…

The memoir I read is about a young woman, Koren Zailckas, who, over the course of growing up, not only experimented with alcohol, but also went through the whole cycle of alcohol abuse. She shares her experiences in order to present that this can be the case with anyone and evolves over time, not all at once. She begins the story by talking about one of her childhood friends, Natalie, with whom presented Koren’s first sip of alcohol. She describes Natalie as one of those friends who always was the first to do things, and to encourage others to jump on board. After trying Southern Comfort at the young age of 14, she realizes that this alcohol stuff makes the inhibitions, which she struggles with so often, disappear—She loves this. She wants to drink more after this time, but Natalie goes away to a boarding school, and Koren’s source of alcohol goes right with her. She goes on to talk about her drinking experiences in high school, particularly at age 16 when she requires her stomach to be pumped after a party. She went on to college where she stayed in the party scene, joined a sorority, and continued her bad habits. She had many negative experiences including sexual encounters, fights, and problems with relationships, all while under the influence of heavy alcohol. She tries quitting a few times unsuccessfully, even moving away from the party scene. She is finally able to quit at the age of 23 after realizing how much it cost her.…

Mama also acts as the glue that holds the family together. She never looks for her own benefit, like Walter, but for the gain of the family as a whole. When she buys the house in the all white community without asking how the rest of the family might feel may seem selfish, but she has actually done something that will benefit herself, Walter, Beneatha, Ruth, Travis, and even the new expecting baby. Mama is the member of the family that everyone else goes to for advice; even when they know that the advice won't be what they want to hear, they know she will give them the advice that's in their best interest. From the outward appearance and someone's first thought, people may not think Mama is very important; but the Younger family would not be able to cooperate and succeed without the role of Mama.…

On Tuesday October 18th I went to the Hippodrome to watch my very first play and I must say, it was the best experience I’ve had with theater. I’ve been part of several school productions but I’ve never took my time out one watch one. The play titled “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane” is about a child star named Jane who is favored by her father because of her talent. Her older sister Blanche is overlooked because she was not as famous as Baby Jane. One night returning after a party, one of the sisters were drunk while going back home, one of the sister’s got out of the car to open the gate leading up to their house, the other sister attempted to run her over because of jealousy and that actually led to Blanche ending up being paralyzed. Because of that, Jane ended up getting stuck taking care of her sister Blanche. Overall the play was fantastic and the…
