A Rose for Emily
A Rose for Emily is thought to take place around the Civil War and into the 1900’s in the town of Jefferson, Mississippi, a place very much like the one William Faulkner spent most of his life (Padgett). This is a story of a very troubled and “crazy” woman named Emily Grierson. When her father died she became not only the towns focus but a real threat or problem to the town.
Emily shows you how stubborn and her demeanor is when she is asked to pay the taxes and she just flat out refuses. First she gets a letter and then ignoring it because of what Colonel Sartoris had told her about her father. He had come to her and let her in on a little secret, which her father had lent some money to the town and she didn’t have to pay. Because of this all Emily would say over and over again is that “I have no taxes in Jefferson”(Faulkner 596).
Then when she went to the pharmacy to purchase the poison, “I want some poison. I want the best you have. I don’t care what kind”(Faulkner 598). These two situations show she could be a little crazy, stubborn possibly even dangerous, yet like through out the poem, demanding. Emily made it seem as if she was going to kill herself and even the town’s people thought that very thing, but she doesn’t. She also makes people think that she will marry Homer Barron. We all know after reading the story that she did not marry but killed the one person she loved and held dear. Even then the people in the town didn’t want to believe that she could have done such a thing. I have to say that I don’t truly understand the reason why she did it some say it was because her father had such power over her and kept her from men so that is what she learned. That love is power and to control, therefore killing him, keeping him(McGlynn).
The finding out of the murder came about as people were complaining that Emily’s house “smelled of dust and disuse-a closed, dank smell”(knickerbocker). When some townsmen went to... [continues]
