Roosevelt vs. Truman
Both Roosevelt and Truman were originally elected as vice presidents however, when their presidents died, William McKinley from an assassin in 1901, and Franklin Roosevelt from natural causes in 1945, they had to step up and run the country lacking a vice president. While Truman had less experience with politics, he ultimately did a better job when faced with the sudden presidency. In addition to having less experience and still succeeding, Truman also had much more demanding problems.
1945; World War 2 was in its final year of fighting and by the end of April, Hitler had committed suicide, the Ustasa regime was toppled, and Truman was the new President of the United States. Before his unexpected death, Franklin Roosevelt had been constructing an atomic bomb to use on Japan and failed to inform his vice president about this. This lack of communication between the two was most likely based upon Roosevelt’s worries for if citizens found out about the construction; there was the fear of opposition as well the fear of failure in the face of the nation. The decision of whether to drop the atomic bomb or not, was Truman’s first and greatest conflict. Coming in to presidency at age 42, Roosevelt was 5 years and 29 days younger than President Grover Cleveland, who was previously the youngest president. Roosevelt’s young age was the first conflict he faced. In general, the age of 42 is seen as having much to teach whereas in regards to presidency, age 42 is seen as having much to learn. Conflicts of age could have been much worse for Roosevelt. He had also been the youngest man ever elected to the New York State Assembly and overcame that, which made his age less restricting than it could have been. People still were weary at first of Roosevelt becoming president because they felt that he still had to mature and might not make decisions that would most benefit the country. Both men got over their first hurdles but making a decision on a controversial topic, such as the

1 From 1917 to 1919 Woodrow Wilson argued that the United States faced new responsibilities for global leadership, and advocated U.S. participation in the League of Nations, a collective body designed to ensure international peace, security, and prosperity. Most Americans rejected Wilson’s overtures, however. Beginning in 1937 Franklin Roosevelt (and Truman after FDR’s death) made arguments similar to those of Wilson and ultimately built widespread public support for full involvement in World War II and postwar international organizations like the United Nations, the IMF and World Bank, etc. Why did Roosevelt and Truman succeed where Wilson failed? Had the new Democrats presented their initiatives more skillfully, had Americans changed their way of thinking about the relationship between their country and the world, had the world changed, perhaps, or was it something else? Explain using examples from readings and lecture (and note that you are not required to go into any depth about the specifics of the World War I era, but rather to engage with the thinking of Americans in the 1930s and 1940s).…

Herbert Hoover and Franklin Roosevelt were both presidents during one of the most difficult times in American history, the Great Depression. To try and ease the hardships that many Americans were facing, each President developed many different programs. The different actions that each took to lessen the blow of the depression classified them as either a liberal or conservative. If their actions focused on helping the economy, they would be considered a conservative. If they were more focused on helping the lives of the American people, they would be classified as a liberal. Neither President can be labeled as strictly one. Although Franklin Roosevelt was commonly thought of as a liberal and Herbert Hoover a conservative, neither can be considered strictly one sided.…

The Great Depression caused hardship for almost everyone in America. Franklin Roosevelt and Herbert Hoover were two presidents during this era with two very different approaches on how to deal with it. Roosevelt is generally thought of as a liberal, while Hoover is considered a conservative. A liberal is generally someone who pushes for direct government involvement in citizens’ lives, while a conservative typically pushes for limited government. Roosevelt did indeed have a more liberal approach, putting mammoth sums of money into relief programs directly for the people; Hoover was conservative in his approach—he claimed it was the job of churches and private charities to provide relief, however became less conservative towards the end of his term.…

There is usually great debate when discussing whether Theodore Roosevelt or Woodrow Wilson was a better president during the Progressive era. In order to make an educated conclusion on who was the best, though, we must first define progressivism. Progressivism is the political orientation of those who favor progress toward better conditions in government and society. With this in mind, although it may seem like the competition is neck and neck, we can conclude that Theodore Roosevelt was ultimately the better progressive president.…
