Romeo&Juliet ending scence
Ending scene:
The play I have studied is Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. This play is set in Verona, It revolves around the ‘’star crossed lovers’’ that fall in love despite their families have an ‘’ancient grudge’’ against one another. The closing scene in this play had a powerful impact on me as it was full of excitement, suspense drama and finally tragedy.
There is a lot of suspense in the closing acts of the play as it is clear everything has already gone wrong for the two ‘star crossed lovers’. The friars plan to create an alliance between the Capulet’s and the Montague’s has failed. As a result the friar is making plans and decisions as he goes along.
When the friar gives Juliet a potion to seem ‘stiff and stark and cold, appear like death’ to fake her own death, his plan of loopholes begin to unravel. Anything that can go wrong does go wrong. Friar john did not get the message to Romeo. Therefore Romeo presumes Juliet’s death is in fact real. After hearing of Juliet’s death, Romeo gets poison that has the power to kill twenty men ‘straight’. These unlikely events add to the drama of the play. They compel the reader to read on.
When Romeo goes to the vault to lie with Juliet, Paris arrives. This surprised me. When Paris confronts Romeo, Romeo warns ‘tempt not a desperate man’. When Romeo kills Paris I felt sorry for Paris as he is only an innocent victim, who had no idea what had been going on.
I found Romeos reaction when he saw Juliet in the vault moving as he was still struck by her beauty. ‘For here lies Juliet, and her beauty makes this vault a feasting presence full of light’.
The saddest moment of the play, in my opinion is the moment Juliet woke up and saw Romeo lying dead beside her. All her courage and sacrifice had been for nothing. It was heart breaking when Juliet kissed Romeo and said ‘Thy lips are warm’, because she now knew a few seconds would have saved both of them.
