Act II Summaries

Act II Scene I

A. This scene takes place outside the Capulet Orchard B. The main characters in this scene are Mercutio, Benvolio, and Romeo C. In this scene Romeo is going to see Juliet again. As he leaps the orchard walls he hears Mercutio and Benvolio coming. They are unaware the Romeo is listening and that he has moved onto loving someone else. Mercutio starts to tease about Romeos love for Rosaline without knowing that Romeo has moved on. Benvolio then persuades Mercutio to leave and stop teasing about Romeos love.

Act II Scene II

A. This scene takes place outside Juliet’s window B. The main characters in this scene re Romeo and Juliet C. In this scene Romeo is beneath Juliet’s window and overhears her talking about her love for Romeo and she doesn’t care about the feud between the two families. Romeo hears all of this and says “call me but love.” The two express their devotion to each other. The nurse then interrupts them to talk to her but Juliet returns shortly. She tells him that she wants to get married and that she will send someone to ask Romeo about the wedding plans he made.

Act II Scene III

A. This scene takes place at Friar Laurence’s cell B. The main characters in this scene are Friar Laurence and Romeo C. Romeo goes to Friar Laurence’s cell as the morning comes. Friar Laurence is collecting flowers and herbs. He is very into using the flowers for medicating and poisoning. Romeo expresses his new love for Juliet and asks the Friar to marry them that day secretly. Friar Laurence is very concerned about Romeo and how he has switched his love from Rosaline to Juliet so quickly. Although he is shocked he agrees to help them to be married and thinks this will stop the feud between the two families.

    At first glance, one may look over the character of Friar Laurence and dismiss him as only a minor player in the story of Romeo and Juliet. However, upon closer examination, it becomes obvious that the Friar plays an essential role in the development of the play and is notable for moving the action along.     The scene starts with two servants of the Capulet's, Sampson and Gregory. They are discussing how they will fight the Montague's and be civil with the women. They use violent language and when they see a Montague servant they act threatening and rude. Sampson, being daring bites his thumb at Abram, a rude gesture in Shakespearian times and he is verbally intimidating. Tybalt and Benvolio enter. Tybalt is a more violent character, full of hatred, the opposite of good willed Benvolio who is peaceful and tries to calm the two families. They still end up fighting until an officer enters and splits them up. The master and lady of each house emerge. Both the males are launching themselves at each other and the ladies trying to calm them. The Prince disciplines them and threatens them to death if they fight again, showing authority. During the Prince's ruling we get an insight into the ongoing feud between the two families. The families depart each other's company and Lord Montague asks where Romeo is. We find out that Romeo has hidden in the woods, seeking solitude and avoiding trouble. Montague has no sympathy for Romeo, because at home he remains in his chambers, isolated and shutting out light, creating an artificial night. When we meet Romeo he tells Benvolio he is out of love, he is confused and overdramatising, intoxicated by love and not in control. He is acting selfish and feels rejected by Rosaline because she did not want sex with him. Benvolio gives him words of advice but Romeo dismisses it all.…
