Act One
1.Why do Sampson and Gregory fight with Montague’s men? They fight because they think that they are better than the Montague’s men. When Montague’s men here this they provoke Sam and Greg and it turns into a Capulet and Montague brawl. 2.Benvolio and Tybalt come upon the servants fighting. Contrast their reactions to the fight. Benvolio tried to stop the fighting, but Tybalt calls Benvolio a coward for not wanting to fight. 3.When Montague and Caplet enter and see the disturbance, they want to fight, too. What do their wives say? Their wives tell them that it’s not worth it, and that this fighting is stupid. 4.What ended the opening skirmish? The prince came and ordered everyone to stop fighting and that the next person that starts a fight would be executed. 5.Why is Romeo sad? Romeo is sad because he loves the girl named Rosalina. However, Rosalina isn’t into him. This causes Romeo to feel depressed, and talks to his friend, Benvolio. 6.In Act 1 Scene2, Paris asks Capulet for Juliet’s hand in marriage. What is Capulet’s reply? Capulet replies to him that he can, but that Juliet needs to like him too in order to marry. 7.Why is Capulet giving a feast? Juliet wants to meet other people before she is forced to marry Paris. 8.How does Romeo find out about the feast, and why does he decide to go even though (being a Montague) he is not invited? Benvolio tells Romeo about the feast, and convinces Romeo to go and sneak in wearing a mask. 9.Describe Juliet’s relationship with her family in Act 1. Juliet is not very fond of her parents wanting her to marry so soon. 10.At the end of Act 1 Scene 4, what does Romeo tell Benvolio, foreshadowing future action in the play? That his love for Juliet will be the death of him. 11.What does Romeo mean when he says, “Oh, dear account! My life is my foe’s debt.”?
