It’s Not My Fault Imagine all the events in someone's life spiraling out of control, and that person was unable to turn things around. Whom would that person blame? In The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, many characters died. Tybalt was responsible for Mercutio’s death because he murdered Mercutio. Lady Montague’s death was Romeo’s fault, because she could not deal with his exile. He was also accountable for Tybalt’s passing because he killed Tybalt in revenge, as well as Paris’s death, because Paris provoked him into fighting. Fate is to blame for Romeo and Juliet’s deaths, because it decided that they would be star-crossed lovers and have a disastrous ending. The tragic deaths in Romeo and Juliet were fueled by Tybalt's hatred of the Montagues, Romeo's irrational decisions, and unlucky fate. Tybalt’s abhorrence of the Montagues was the reason why he picked a fight with Romeo. Tybalt said to Romeo, “Therefore turn and draw” (III.1.38). Romeo refused to fight him, so Mercutio decided to duel with him instead. Mercutio ended up getting killed by Tybalt, who was at fault because he challenged people to duels and murdered Mercutio. Romeo was enraged that Tybalt killed his best friend, so without thinking rationally, Romeo killed Tybalt in revenge (III.1.93). Tybalt’s death was Romeo’s fault, because even though Tybalt killed Mercutio, it does not mean it was right for Romeo to kill Tybalt. Romeo’s irrational decision to kill Tybalt caused him to be expelled from Verona. Lord Montague said, “Alas, my liege, my wife is dead tonight. Grief of my son’s exile hath stopped her breath” (V.3.218-220). Lady Montague couldn’t cope with her son’s exile, and she died because of it. If Romeo had not made the horrible decision to kill someone, he would not have gotten exiled. Then Lady Montague would not be in a lot of pain and sadness, and would not have died.
