Rome, Italy
My Trip to Rome, Italy
I had learned I was being sent to Italy in March of 2000 for a machine tool exhibition. I found out the happy news just before leaving work. Excitedly I jumped into my car and started my journey home. As I drove home down I-95 through all of the usual evening traffic I just kept thinking about ho I was going to tell my husband we were going to Italy. That night I continuously paced the floor looking out of my bedroom window to see if my husband was home from work yet. As he drove up in our driveway I ran outside to tell him the good news. I said, "Nick guess where we are going in March?" Before he could even say where I yelled out "Italy"! Italy, he said with a puzzled look on his face. I then explained the situation with work and said to him since if I have the opportunity to go I thought it would be a great idea for you to come along with me. I suggested scheduled some time before the show for the two of us to travel around Rome. Later that night it was settled we would schedule a couple of days to tour Rome before the exhibition.
It seemed like forever before we would finally be on our way, but then before I knew it we were on the airplane and the flight attendant is announcing fasten your seatbelts and prepare for landing into Leonardo da Vinci airport. After arriving at the airport we had to transfer to a train that would take us to the city center. It was about a 30-minute train ride. Along the ride I was getting my first look at Rome, mostly the colorful countryside with the rows of sunflowers that were so splendid with bright yellow centers, and green leaves that were so full of life. Just pass the beautiful field of sunflowers was a small farmhouse made of stone. You could see the smoke coming out of the chimney and the farmers working their land.
Upon arriving at the main train station, "Stazione Termini" in Italian, the excitement was building I couldn't wait another minute to see all the sites of Rome. The

To complete the property tour, we looked at the bedroom, comfortably proportioned for a queen sized bed and a floor-to-ceiling closet with a large window facing Paolina Park. The attractive bathroom was functional and came equipped with all the essentials. Lastly, we looked at the garage. Maria Laura informed us that Italians refer to a garage as a “car box”. The car box was large enough to accommodate a mid-sized car, a workbench, and storage for tools and seasonal items. I was overjoyed…

When Brunelleschi arrive in Rome in 1402, shortly after the competition for the Baptistery door in Florence, the city must have seemed a pitiful place. Its population had shrunk from around 1 million in 100 CE to under 20,000 as a result of the Black Death. It was located in a relatively tiny enclave across the Tiber from the Vatican and Saint Peter’s Basilica and was surrounded by the ruins of a once-great city.…

Entering the villa the first room I walk into is the atrium. The atrium is the main public room in a Roman house. In the middle of the atrium is an impluvium, which is like a small pool. And it has an open ceiling above it so it can catch rain water. This room leads me out to the Inner Peristyle. Rows of columns surround this beautiful garden. The columns are modeled after those in the House of the Colored Capitals in Pompeii. In the corners are marble fountains that are re-creations from the Villa dei Papri. And a narrow pool is in the center and is lined with replicas of bronze statues that resemble women that would have once been found at the Villa dei Papiri. As I walk around the colonnade I notice the coffered ceiling. This ceiling imitates stone ceilings found on the Street of the Tombs in Pompeii. The colonnades floor is paved with terrazzo.…

Baja California is one of the 31 states in Mexico. It is both the northernmost and westernmost state of Mexico. But before becoming a state in 1953, the area was known as the North Territory of Baja California. It has an area of 70,113 km2 (27,071 sq mi), or 3.57% of the land mass of Mexico and comprises the northern half of the Baja California peninsula. The state is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean, on the east by Sonora, the U.S. State of Arizona, and the Gulf of California, and on the south by Baja California Sur. Its northern limit is the U.S. state of California. The state has a population of about 2,844,469, and an estimated 3,165,776 more than the sparsely populated Baja California Sur to the south, and similar to San Diego County, California on its north. Over 75% of the population lives in the capital city, Mexicali, or in Ensenada and Tijuana. Other important cities include San Felipe, Rosarito and Tecate. The population of the state is composed of Mestizos, mostly immigrants from other parts of Mexico, and, as with most northern Mexican states, a large population of Mexicans of European ancestry, and also a large minority group of East Asian, Middle Eastern and indigenous descent. Additionally, there is a large immigrant population from the United States due to its proximity to San Diego and the cheaper cost of living compared to San Diego. There is also a significant population from Central America. Many immigrants moved to Baja California for a better quality of life and the number of higher paying jobs in comparison to the rest of Mexico and Latin America. Baja California is the twelfth largest state by area in Mexico. Its geography ranges from beaches to forests and deserts. The backbone of the state is the Sierra de Baja California, where the Picacho del Diablo, the highest point of the peninsula, is located. This mountain range effectively divides the weather patterns in the state.…

As I finally walked up the great hill, I caught sight of ‘the building’ and I knew at once it was the globe Theatre, it was the gorgeous narrow castle on the left. It was the most out-standing building of all of them and it had a reddish flag at the very top which meant there was a performance on that day. The building was like a sky-scraper and its colour was just so different from the dull and dark other buildings. The building had a very circular shape.…

“Alright but I think I can try to figure it out” I replied. The rest of the flight was long and monotonous, and I could not fall asleep because I was too excited. We arrived in Milan after a six hour flight and right from that flight we had to board another smaller plane to go to the airport near my Grandparents home town. This flight only took two hours but it was still terrible. We arrived at the second airport and we had my uncle waiting for us with his tiny car. We stuffed all of our luggage into the car and we made our way to Acri. While we were in the car he was speaking to my mom and grandparents and I could not understand anything he said, it was like trying to put a puzzle together without any of the pieces. We had made it, I was ready to start my vacation but I was hungry and jet lagged. So we went out for some pizza and gelato and we went back and…
