Romanticized Stereotypes of French Women in the 1935 Palmolive Advertisement

The Palmolive advertisement from 1935 depicts the romanticized stereotypes of French women in the early 1930's. The advertisement was being placed in American magazines and newspapers which gave the impression that the voice of the article was suggesting that French women are more endearing and attractive to the opposite sex than American women. Unlike previous Palmolive advertisements, this one in particular also included the importance of having smooth, beautiful skin on not only the face but also the arms, shoulders and legs. Palmolive made quite the sexual suggestion when they added the list of body parts that also needed to be smooth and beautiful. The sexual suggestion along with the French reference supports the idea that French women are 'sexier' and more physically appealing than the American women that the advertisement is focused. The voice behind this advertisement seems to be from 'Famous Beauty Specialist of Paris, France', Armand Delurd or at least that is how the advertisement appears. Placing Mr. Delurd's picture directly below the image of the two beautiful French women and directly above the text insinuates to the reader that he not only endorses the product but has actually written this personal 'note' to the reader. There are a couple of sexual subtleties in the photo as well. For instance the brunette appears to be lounging on a chaise lounge chair which would be appropriate to French culture especially of that time, but looking at the image a different way it could also very easily be the blonde woman's left leg. Either way, the image is drawn to be very intimate as though the reader is eavesdropping on the conversation between the two women. The brunette's left eyebrow is raised but she is smiling, almost to suggest that she is in a state of lighthearted disbelief of what the blonde is saying. The topic of conversation between the two women appears to be interesting and private with sexual undertones that can be drawn from the body...
