Public Health is part of our everyday life from the water we drink to the food we eat and the air we breathe. It forms the grass roots of a community. It empowers all people that are involved as a whole. But the history of public health is the story of searching an effective means of preventing diseases in the population, its social conditions and systems that can affect everyone. Throughout centuries, public health has evolved with many trial and errors improving the quality of life populations through new technology, treatment and interventions, scientific discovery to policy changes, to prevention, benefitting entire populations. But today public health faces many pressing challenges that the government and its agencies, in partnership with the population and the private sector have a major role to play in the quest to ensure the safety of products we use in our everyday life; in addition, to promoting public health, to participate in scientific research towards new treatments, and interventions for new diseases and pandemics such as the swine flu, to be proactive, to be effective and efficient to its highest quality to achieve the desired outcomes as a whole.
Public health builds on the premise that the causes of health extends beyond the boundaries of individual biology and behavior (Leischow & Milstein, 2006) to advance and monitor the health of the population in communities throughout the nation. In order to do this; cultures will need to be change, educational and outreach programs will need to be expanded at all levels of education, people will need to be advocates targeting their own health improvement, program deliveries will need to be assessed and changes will need to be made accordingly, not only in technology but all facets of building quality for health prevention for its people so they can empower themselves.
