Roe v. Wade
Abortion has become known to be disruptive and argumentative in the United States. Abortion has been common in the United States, but I believe that abortion is wrong. Whether it is right or wrong, this remains a topic that has put the beliefs and the conservatives on the crossing path with each side remaining reliable in its argument regarding the appropriateness or the inappropriateness of abortion. The role of state in regard to the issue has been widely discussed. Though many decisions concerning abortion have been maintained by the Supreme Court, none has remained a remnant and a cause of a major storm than the Roe v. Wade decision. Roe v. Wade state that the Supreme Court ruled that women had a constitutional right to abortion, and that this right was based on an implied right to personal privacy coming from the Ninth and Fourteenth Amendments.
Before Roe v. Wade, only 4 states plus Washington D.C. provided easy access to abortion. All other states limited access to some extent. Since abortion access was limited, only those who could afford to travel to one of these states or to a foreign country was allowed the privilege of ending an unwanted or unhealthy pregnancy. Many pregnant women and health care professionals believed that access to safe abortions should be a right, not a privilege and challenged the right of states to restrict access to abortions by trained medical personnel. Desperate women who could not afford to travel often self-aborted or trusted themselves to back-alley abortionists. Both practices frequently led to later health problems, sterility or even death. Ten years before the decision in Roe v. Wade, the women’s movement had gained power with the 1963 publication of Betty Friedan’s The Feminine Mystique. The birth of this “second wave” of feminism led to greater awareness of the rights of women.
