Religion is often considered a defining aspect of one’s entire existence. For some people, religion can play an important role in expression. For Robert Browning, his view on religion was extremely influential in the personal philosophies he expressed through his poetry. Whether a person is deeply rooted, or not as connected with their religious preference, religion still affects the individual. Robert Browning had the chance to connect with both aspects of religious preference. He lived within the rejection of any religious affiliation but also the embrace of Christianity. Robert Browning never restrained himself to let any of his readers know exactly what his view on Christianity or God was, even at the disagreement of his most admired influences. Robert Browning's capricious spiritual disposition created thematic contradictions of religious piety and worldly love as prominently displayed in “The Poetical Works of Robert Browning”.
Robert Browning came from a stable family with a loving father, mother, and younger sister. He was a very smart child and took his education seriously. “When Browning was ten he passed from the lower school to the classes of the Reverend Thomas Ready, studying writing, arithmetic, English, history, Latin, and Greek” (Collins). From this school, Browning excelled in all of his studies. This private school offered a range variety of top level classes for a boy Browning’s age. “He was an extremely bright child and a voracious reader and learned Latin, Greek, French and Italian by the time he was fourteen” (Everett). Because Browning was such an avid learner, he soon became too far ahead of the other students.
