The Ritz-Carlton Success

The Ritz Carlton Is a hotel chain that almost everyone is familiar with. The Ritz-Carlton has a lot of brand name qualities to it and has enjoyed a lot of success due in part to the image that the name carries. You can know that if you stay in a Ritz hotel anywhere in the world you can be confident that you are staying in a high-quality hotel with great service. There is currently a term that is attributed to Ritz-Carlton. When something is referred to as “ritzy” it’s of high quality. Ritz-Carlton’s success in the hotel industry can be attributed almost 100% to the Total Quality Management (TQM) program they developed in the early 1990’s. The Ritz Carlton Hotel Company is a management firm that was formed in 1983. It was started when W.B. Johnson purchased the right to the Ritz-Carlton name along with the Boston Ritz-Carlton. Today it has grown to eighty-one hotels across the US, Canada, Europe, Mexico, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and Africa. The company is also planning to add several more hotels in the coming years with the addition of twelve more hotels overseas. Ritz-Carlton also has add-in services such as spas, golf lessons, destination clubs and luxurious residences at most of their hotels. In 2000 The Ritz Carlton launched their Leadership Center. This center welcomes top executives from all different industries to share their business practices. (The Ritz Carlton, 2013) The Ritz Carlton Developed their Total Quality Management (TQM) program to set a standard in the hotel industry how their customers or guests should be treated. It includes Gold Standards which in itself includes a credo, motto, three steps of service and twenty “Ritz Carlton Basics.” (How Ritz-Carlton Appliies "TQM", 1993) To implement this system and make it successful Ritz-Carlton set up a targeted selection process to hire candidates based upon matching employees skills with values that Ritz-Carlton decides are imperative.
