Rising Son
On June 2, 2007, my wife Julie gave birth to our first child. Our son’s birth was one of the most memorable days of my life. For nine months we planned, prepared and protected. When the day finally came, it was as if I was only a spectator as the miraculous event unfolded. I climbed aboard an emotional roller-coaster which took me on the adventure of a lifetime. It was a day I will never forget.
The date was June 1, 2007. The time was around 3:30 in the afternoon. After finishing an installation I was heading back to the shop. That is when I received the call. I knew Julie had a doctor’s appointment that day, and was waiting for her to call and tell me how it went. Instead, it was my mother-in-law, Chris, saying, “Julie and I are on our way to the hospital. The doctor listened to the baby’s heart beat and wants to induce labor. Mark is on his way to get you.”
Right away I went into shock. When I recall it; it seems almost dream-like, kind of fuzzy as if I was floating instead of walking. Every bad scenario Began to play out in my head. Mark, my father-in-law, arrived promptly. We made our way downtown in his silver Chrysler Sebring Convertible. Of course, we rode with the top down, smoking cigars all the way. As we rode Mark tried to calm me down. The anxiety must have been painted across my face like a wall of graffiti.
When we arrived at the hospital I went straight in while Mark parked the car. As I walked in I thought to myself that when I left hospital I would be a new father. My life was about to change.
