Rip Van Winkle by Washington Irving

Rip Van Winkle by Washington Irving is a short fictional story. It was set in the years before and after the Revolutionary War. Rip lived in a pleasant village at the bottom of New York’s Catskill Mountains. One day Rip decided that he needed to escape his wife’s nagging so he went up the mountain with his pet dog. They reach a hollow where there were bearded men playing the nine-pins. Rip doesn’t say anything but instead drinks some of their moonshine and falls into a slumber. When he wakes more time than he realizes has passed and much has changed. His wife has died, his son has grown to be a man and George Washington is now president, he has been asleep for at least twenty years. Rip learned that the men he met in the mountains are rumored to be the ghosts of Hendrick Hudson’s crew, which had vanished long ago. He was lucky that an old resident recognizes him and Rip's grown daughter takes him in.
The story was set in the past, part of it in a remote and exciting place and time. “..An old gentleman of New York, who was very curious in the Dutch history...” New York back in 1819 could be very exciting; even now New York is invigorating. Some places that could be considered compelling back then and in that area could be anything from what surrounds it to even what’s in it. “Whoever has made a voyage up the Hudson, must remember the Kaatskill Mountains.” During every day and age there is always someone who knows what’s what, who knows everything about anything. And sometimes that can be very helpful. It sure seemed to help Rip. “..His majesty George the third. Here they used to sit in the shade, of a long lazy summer’s day, talk listlessly over village gossip…”
