Rip Van Winkle
Rip Van Winkle, which is an author of America’s short story. Who is Washington Irving. And Rip Van Winkle is protagonist of this story. He slept during 20 years, when he woke up, everything was different.

Washington Irving(1783-1859) is typical author of romanticism literature of America. And He is speaker in Rip Van Winkle story. And he liked to write romanticism literature. Romanticism is opposed to classicism literature. This origin is so old with history of human race. Especially, this is originate in Europe with awakening of the racial spirit of many other country on between the end of 18 century and the beginning of 19 century. Although the romanticism literary movement progressed only on the beginning of 19 century, it was broaden a one’s imagination caused by liberation of ego, return of nationical, localical trandition, the love of nature and mysticism.

But classicism respected rationalistic method and balanced the beauty of form, so it was static. Therefore, definition of romanticism scholarship is release of sensitivity, aspiration and uneasiness about infinity. It is special feature.

Rip Van Winkle is influenced by romanticism, Irving set a background on the edge of Catskill Mountains. And people think Catskill Mountains are perfect barometer. Because If weather is sunny and perfect, then mountains tinged with blue color and violet color. And Catskill Mountains are so beautiful. And It is surrounded by river and mountains, so It appeared the romantic, the imaginative, the freedom, the emotional and the nature. And character of a protagonist appeared romanticism on each backgrounds, events, and characters. And Rip Van Winkle wanted to live on liberty life. And he accomplished his dream life through the imaginative. And Rip Van Winkle met a man, who wore Netherlands clothes.
