What fundamental rights do
Hong Kong residents enjoy?

The word ‘rights’ refers to the rights and freedoms that citizens have and enjoy under the law. The fundamental rights that Hong Kong residents enjoy are set out in Chapter III of the Basic Law (see Appendix on pp.32-35 for the relevant provisions). Other Chapters also have similar references.

There is a wide range of fundamental rights and freedoms that Hong Kong residents enjoy. Chapter III of the Basic Law states that Hong Kong residents enjoy political, social, economic and personal freedom and that these freedoms are protected by law.

the inviolable freedom of the person…

What words occur most often in Chapter III of the Basic Law? The answers must be either “freedom” or “Hong Kong residents”. Why do they occur so often in Chapter III?
Thanks to the law, Hong Kong residents have been enjoying much freedom in many areas. This is the cornerstone of Hong Kong’s success. Chapter III of the Basic Law is all about that – the protection of freedom. On this promise, Hong Kong people’s confidence is restored, and Hong Kong continues to be successful after 1997.
