THE GOOD
(1) Gov. Perry is definitely pro-life and pro-marriage. Our Texas legislature has just passed one of the strongest sonogram laws in the country and laws that will help to defund Planned Parenthood. (2) Gov. Perry has been very assertive about his demands that the federal government shoulder the responsibility of securing our borders. (3) Gov. Perry has pushed Texas to adopt tort reform laws that have encouraged businesses and healthcare professionals to settle in our state. (4) These business-friendly practices have made Texas a welcome environment for job creation and for business growth. (5) Gov. Perry believes in Texas balancing its budget rather than in raising taxes. (6) Gov. Perry is stubbornly independent and strongly believes in states’ rights. (7) Gov. Perry believes in freedom of religion and not freedom from religion. He knows that the U. S. Constitution does not contain the words “separation of church and state.”
THE BAD (1) Apparently during this last legislative session, Gov. Perry was more interested in running for President than in supporting the Republican leaders on the State Board of Education. (2) On May 11, 2001 and over the protests of many conservatives, Gov. Perry signed Hate Crimes Bill (HB 587) into law. (3) Gov. Perry’s rhetoric on immigration policies has not matched up to the results. During this last legislative session, Gov. Perry publicly supported a bill that would have prohibited Texas cities from being Sanctuary Cities for illegal immigrants. Such a bill would have required local law enforcement officers to work more closely with immigration officials. However, the Session ended without that bill being passed. (4) He lost his train of thinking in his run for the presidential debates. (5) He was stopped by the Texas highway patrol and he refused to have his friend accept the ticket for speeding and told the
