Rhetorical Modes Matrix

Rhetorical modes are methods for effectively communicating through language and writing. Complete the following chart to identify the purpose and structure of the various rhetorical modes used in academic writing. Provide at least 2 tips for writing each type of rhetorical device.

Rhetorical Mode
Purpose – Explain when or why each rhetorical mode is used.Structure – Explain what organizational method works best with each rhetorical mode. Provide 2 tips for writing in each rhetorical mode. NarrationTelling stories to a person or audience.The structure of Narrative stories is usually chronological order trying to tell the series of events in the story.

1.) Have a strong opening into your story to be able to hook in the reader to read further.

2.) Use the 4 basic components of plot, character, conflict and theme to help write an outline for the story.

Able to demonstrate and support a point through the use of evidence.Goes by order of importance in significance of evidence.

1.) Make sure to organize the evidence in terms of importance from least to greatest or vise versa.

2.) While choosing the evidence you are going to use, make sure it is appropriate for the subject and your audience. DescriptionUsing descriptions words to keep the audience immersed into the story by using sensory details.Spatial order is usually the best method. Ideas are organized by characteristics or appearance.

1.) Make sure to keep your paper organized in spatial order to your descriptive essay.

2.) Start with your first main impression of what you are talking about in your essay. ClassificationTo break ideas down into smaller, more precise parts.By breaking each idea down into subcategories.
