By looking at a picture, do you think you could describe the tone, mood, and atmosphere? There’s a picture that has a family (two adults and two children) with a dead soul over them. The picture has a guard and workers around the family. The book called Night by Elie Wiesel is about Jews being taken to or living in a concentration camp. How do these two items relate? How are they similar? How are they different? In the novel Night, the main focus the reader would compare the text on page 37 and the picture. The text talks about how the families are traveling and how the families are being transferred to the camp where the Jews will be “living” at. Elie talks about seeing his father’s eyes veiled and Elie wanted to say something but couldn’t, almost as if he was mute. Elie sees how his father has changed and starts to realize that he is changing as well. The tone of the paragraph is hopeless. The atmosphere is conveyed by Elie Wiesel describing the thick, bitter, and coldness that Elie felt. The mood is set by the dreadful and horrifying actions and feelings by the Jews and S.S. Officers. The picture that the reader had to analyze was about a family being destroyed by misery. The family looked as if they were hungry, poor, and sick. The young children looks like their life was ripped or sucked right out of them. The dreary sky conveyed the deadly atmosphere. The book and the picture are alike by both the families being in a concentration camp. Both describe families’ suffering together. Both families carried everything that had sentimental value. The sorrowful mood exposes how pitiful life was. Their souls and homes were invaded. In both the novel and the picture had said or shown souls being taken away.
The picture is different by its mournful tone, which is demonstrated by the facial expressions made. In Night Elie says he’s a changed person and he changes rapidly. Elie says his soul is being ripped out by a black flame, which shows symbolism. The black flame could be a sign of death or fire. In the picture the souls are lingering about the family and looks like a ghost or an angel of death. The picture and text are alike and different. The text and picture have many common points of view. By comparing the picture and the text from Night the reader found a connection with atmosphere, tone, and mood. It’s all about how you look at something like textual evidence or a picture and describe or contrast and compare each.

There are many themes jumping around in Night. One of the themes is how important family is. “Men to the left! Women to the right!" (Chapter 3, pg. 27). Those eight simple words stuck in Elies head for a while. He did not know that at this point he would never see his sister or mother again. In the story, ‘Night’, author Elie Wiesel shares his most personal experiences during the Holocaust, during which he lost his family and many friends. As a young man, Eliezer’s faith in humanity and religion is shattered following the unparalleled evil perpetrated by the German’s against the Jews. In the year 1944, at the young age of fifteen, Eliezer and his family were taken from their home to the Auschwitz concentration camp, and then to Buchenwald where they endured unimaginable cruelty at the hands of the Germans. Eliezer and his townsmen are packed into cattle cars, with barley room to stand and suffer terribly. When Eliezer arrives in Auschwitz, he is greeted by his first selection. He and his father follow the line that passes a pit of burning babies. Elie writes “Never shall I forget those flames which consumed my faith forever. Never shall I forget that nocturnal silence which deprived me, for all eternity, of the desire to live. Never shall I forget those moments which murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to dust. Never shall I forget these things, even if I am condemned to live as long as God Himself. Never” (pg. 34). Over the following months at Auschwitz, Eliezer and his father endured inhumane treatment and living conditions within the camps. The prisoners are forced to run 42 kilometers in a blizzard following evacuation from Buna. For those who could not keep up, the SS had orders to shoot anyone who could not sustain the pace. “Their fingers on the triggers, they did not deprive themselves of the pleasure” (pg. 85). Upon their arrival at Buchenwald, Eliezer's father is unable to move. Eliezer brings him soup and coffee, against the advice of other prisoners who counsel him to keep it for himself. Eliezer's father, suffering from dysentary, begs for water. An SS guard becomes annoyed and knocks him in the head. Eliezer wakes up the next morning and discovers his father's empty bed. He is more relieved than sad.…

“Night” is set between 1941 and 1945 during World War II. During this time, the holocaust was occurring throughout Western Europe. Most of the story takes place in Auschwitz, a German death camp that Elie, the main character, is taken to. The setting of the novel is the main cause of all of the challenges Elie is faced with. The story is told in first person from Elie’s point of view, which allows the reader to get a firsthand account of the conflicts he struggles with. One of the most apparent issues that Elie is constantly confronted with is the unity of him and his father. Throughout the entire work, Elie’s primary goal is to stay with his father at all costs.
