Yearnings of the Dreamers
A Critique for Revolutionary Road
The direction is by Sam Mendes, who dissected suburban desperation in “American Beauty," which is filmed in 1999. Composer Thomas Newman (American Beauty, WALL-E) provides a beautiful score that adds more emotional weight than the scenes often deserve. The screenplay by Justin Haythe is drawn from the famous 1961 novel by Richard Yates, who has been called the voice of the postwar Age of Anxiety.
"Revolutionary Road" shows the American Dream awakened by a nightmare. It shows a young couple who meet at a party, get married and create a suburban life with a nice house, a manicured lawn, "modern" furniture, two kids, a job in the city for him, housework for her, and martinis, cigarettes, boredom and desperation for both of them.
It 's 1955. Frank and April Wheeler, in the seventh year of their marriage, have fallen into a life that appears to most as being perfect. They live in the Connecticut suburbs with two young children. Frank commutes to New York City where he works in an office job while April stays at home as a housewife. But they 're not happy. April has forgone her dream of becoming an actress, and Frank hates his job - one where he places little effort - although he has never figured out what his passion in life is. One day, April suggests that they move to Paris - a city where Frank visited during the war and loved, but where April has never been - as a means to rejuvenate their life.
They imagine a life of promise with one another; they dream of travelling to Europe where Frank will discover his calling in life and April will become the breadwinner gets a lucrative secretarial job from one of the major international organizations. But what if Frank doesn’t have a calling in life? And what if April isn’t good at corporate jobs? Before they can find out, they are trapped with their two children in an

As the film American Beauty, released in 1999, comes to a close, Lester Burnham final arrives at peace as he realizes the beauty that is depicted in the title. Be as is may, he is suddenly met with his ultimate demise, but not before his penultimate realization. Although this film is coming upon nearly two decades old, the cinematography cannot be undermined, nor can the message as it becomes ever increasingly relevant in today’s society. For that, American Beauty is the quintessential movie that should be revered in the canon of great films. Constantly throughout the film, the recurring idea of beauty brings eventual peace upon some, while others are met with harsh realities; for them, the American dream becomes quite simply, a nightmare.…

Almost always, a movie based on a book is shortened and distorted from its original book to appeal more audiences since a movie appeals more to popular, general audiences. It is no exception for Powwow Highway, written by David Seals and was later made in movie. One of perspective review article, Easin’s on Down the Powwow Highway(s), by Rodney Simard focuses on difference between the film and original novel. It reveals several important points: intensification of Indian stereotype, westernized women roles and the main plot. Although Simard praises the actors’ actions, he criticizes that the movie westernized and reduced characters into stereotype characters by intentional omission and distortions while transforming the original novel to a movie of pop culture’s.…

In the upcoming essay we’re about to do, I want to explore the ideas of Jack Kerouac's transformation throughout the book. When he wrote “On the Road.” people expect him to be this happy optimistic guy. Jack Kerouac was an example of youth and freedom. To everyone he was this person that changed everyone's life and even made a change to people's viewpoint of literature. He was someone that represented the Beat Generation and was even considered the “King of the Beat Generation”. But soon enough, it turns out that he’s become a whole different person. He has grown to old and can’t keep up with the present day. Someone that has turned tired of the image he has created of himself. An image where he wish he had never created. Jack Kerouac even said to himself, “Some sort of sea beatnik, tho anybody wants to call me a beatnik for THIS better try it if they dare.(27)” To explore the possibility of salvation he has met and to explain the purpose of this book to the audience.…

Howard Fast, the author of the book Freedom Road, was born on November 11, 1914 and died at the age of 89 on March 12, 2003. Fast lived a long and adventurous life. A few of the things he did throughout his lifetime were; joining the American Communist party in 1943, serving a prison term in 1950 for refusing to cooperate with the House Committee on Un-American Activities, and his books were purged from American school libraries. On the other hand some of the positive things that happened in his life was that in 1953, he was rewarded the Stalin Peace Prize and in June of 1937 he married his first wife, Bette Cohen. In adjunction with his adventurous lifestyle, Fast spent most of his time writing. He wrote seven works of nonfiction, two autobiographies, fifty-two novels, five short stories one essay, and seven Masao Masuto Mysteries under the Penn name E.V. Cunningham. As well as writing, he created two films based off novels. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howard_Fast)…

Life. What is it? What does it mean? Does it define our very existence? Is it the minds most dwelled upon subject? Is it not the question that every human being regardless of race, color, ethnicity or gender attempts to figure out? It is what Ernesto Guevara (Gael Garcia Bernal) and Alberto Granado (Rodrigo De la Serna) set to find out on their journey of South America in the film “The Motorcycle Diaries”. Ernesto Guevara is a young, good looking medical student from Buenos Aires, Argentina, armed with an immensely strong will, an intense desire to explore and discover, while focused on learning about and making a difference in the world around him. Alberto Granado is a relatively young biochemist, also from Buenos Aires, who is very close friends with Ernesto and his family. He is a radiant, fun loving character who although is not as good looking as his younger comrade, makes up for it with his “let’s do it at all costs” attitude and someone who shares the fundamental beliefs of expiernceing life and making a difference in the world with Ernesto. He, as well as Ernesto, leaves a tremendous impact on the viewer.…

Of Mice and Men, a 1937 novella by John Steinbeck and American Beauty, a 1999 film directed by Sam Mendes, offer various insights into the American Dream and are both contextually driven. Both texts present the possibility of different pursuits of the American Dream and portray a multiplicity of challenges imposed by the societies of their contexts. In Of Mice and Men (OMM), through literary techniques, Steinbeck conveys the importance of the Dream of land ownership and companionship during the difficult times of the 1930s in providing happiness and hope. Mendes, in his film American Beauty (AB), by using satirical and cinematic devices, emphasises the significance of pursuing freedom and family cohesion in a wealthier but materialistically and image-driven society as the essence of the American Dream by the end of the twentieth century. However, both texts reflect the challenges imposed by the social ills of their contexts and ultimately, the American Dream is not able to be achieved and is never a reality in their times.…

“According to Cheryl Torsney, feminist criticism is not a single method, but rather a patchwork or “a quilt” of different methods stitched together with common conviction.” (Lynn 235). Feminist criticism was developed in the late 1960’s and its main focus is women in literature. There are two major concerns when dealing with feminist criticism how women are written and how women have been written. (Lynn 235). Michael Meyer defines feminist criticism as “An approach to literature that seeks to correct or supplement what may be regarded as a predominantly male-dominated critical perspective with a feminist consciousness. Feminist criticism places literature in a social context and uses a broad range of disciplines, including history, sociology, psychology, and linguistics, to provide a perspective sensitive to feminist issues. Feminist theories also attempt to understand representation from a woman’s point of view and to explain women’s writing strategies as specific to their social conditions.(Meyer). I will be applying feminist criticism to the movie Revolutionary Road.…

However, through interpreting Revolutionary Road with Auteur Theory and comparing and contrasting it with American Beauty it is palpable that Mendes has both obsessions and repeated themes. I mainly looked into how Mendes explored the concept of home.Through various camera techniques in both films he revealed himself as fairly pessimistic towards the idea of the 'nuclear family household' and the viewer is left with the feeling that the 'American Dream' is something that doesn't exist. After interpreting Revolutionary Road and American Beauty with Auteur Theory the viewer is left with a question, what is it that defines a home? What's more, does 'home' exist at…
