Review: Movie River
David Blackman- SWK 3370- Frozen River
In the movie “Frozen River”, we meet a family consisting of a mother, Ray, and her two sons: T.J. who is fifteen years old and Ricky who is five years old. Their father, Troy is presently not active in the family as he just took the savings they had been collecting for a double wide and went out to gamble it.
From a micro/ mezzo perspective:
Communication
The family seems strong willed and very attached to each other.
However, TJ seems to be a little defiant towards Ray when it comes to his role in the family.
With his father gone, TJ wants to take up a more adult role as a provider.
Ray wants TJ to focus on his schooling and helping to take care of his little brother Ricky.
The family’s main focus seems to be taking care of Ricky and making sure he is sheltered from what’s going on.
Strengths
The kids still have love for their father, Ricky doesn’t seem to know what his father has done.
Ray and TJ have kept any talk about issue quieted so he can’t hear them.
Ray has been working part time for two years, but her boss refuses to put her on full time because he sees her as “temporary”.
Ray is still working hard to fulfill her promise of a double wide to her children
Barriers
Ray seems to be struggling with depression and feels guilty about having to turn away the double wide until she can come up with the rest of the deposit.
The family is having financial issues due to the fact that the father, Troy, ran away to gamble their savings.
The family home, a trailer, is very old and deteriorating.
The weather is very cold as it is December in Minnesota
Ray has worked the same part time job at Yankee Dollar for two years. The family ate at the table which lately consisted of popcorn and Tang. Ray headed into the reservation to find her husband and even though some locals have issue with her being there, she presses on even to the point of reclaiming her husband’s car that was stolen by a young Native American woman named Lila.

The film chronicles the histories of three fathers, and manages to relates and link their events and situations. First is Mitchell Stephens and his relationship with his drug-addict daughter. Second is Sam, and the secret affair he is having with his young daughter Nicole. He is somewhat of a narcissistic character because of his preoccupation with himself and pleasing himself, and his lack of empathy throughout the film for the others in the town. Third is Billy, who loves his two children so much that he follows behind the school bus every day waving at them. Billy is also having an affair with a married woman who owns the town's only motel. On the exterior the town is an average place with good people just living their lives. But, beneath all the small town simplicity is a web of lies and secrets, some which must be dealt with in the face of this tragedy.…

Fathers play an important role in a child’s life. Not only are they seen as their rock, but also as their protection. This is especially important in a boy’s childhood. This is shown by the relationship of Troy and Cory. Although, Troy is always around in Cory’s youth, he never gives any support for what Cory does. This is proved when Cory has a chance to talk to a college recruiter about football, but Troy claims he has no future in sports and just needs to give it up and go get a job and start making money (Roberts 1046). This incident, along with other questionable actions, lead to the resentment of Troy, not only by Cory, but by the entire family. The other questionable action by Troy was him cheating on his wife with another woman. This event is what totally crushed his relationship with his family, whom now refused to give him any respect. With no respect for Troy, Cory one day makes a comment towards his father, which does not sit well with Troy. This comment soon turns into an argument which, leads to Cory picking up a bat and threatening Troy. Troy then takes the bat from Cory’s hands and knocks him down (Weales). At this point Troy can show his dominance towards…

It is often stated that you should follow your dreams and do whatever makes you happy. The movie A River Runs Through It a perfect representation of this concept. Norman and Paul’s father was a minister and raised them under strong Presbyterian values. The only thing that even came close to the importance of church was fly fishing. In fact, the sport appeared to be like a ritual that almost became part of their religion. Their father would give them strict lessons and showed them the “right and wrong” ways to fly fish. He would even make them practice casting with a metronome. Norman was always tightly on beat with the tempo like his father had taught him but Paul had other plans.…

Clifford R. Shaw and Henry D. McKay (107) observed Juvenile Delinquency in urban areas, and one of the first things they discussed in their chapter was the different values in separate economic areas of the city, and how the socioeconomic status contributes to the amount of crime. Secondly, they discussed differential social organization, which includes the differences in values between the communities (Shaw and McKay). A Theory of Race, Crime and Urban inequality is explained by Robert J. Sampson and William Julius Wilson (114) and they discussed the effects of community structure of race and crime in urban areas. Another thing that Sampson and Wilson (116) debated was the ecological concentration of race and social dislocations. Finally, they discuss the structure of…

    Trying Juveniles as Adults

First, criminologists who deal with juveniles believe poverty, family factors, the environment, media influence, and declining social morality are the main reasons for juvenile crime. It is considered out-dated to say that poverty causes crime, but nearly 22% of children under the age of eighteen live in poverty. Disorganization, dilapidation, deterioration, and despair are all associated with social isolation and economic stress, which are two main factors of poverty (O'Connor). Police patrol through run-down, poverty-stricken areas more frequent in large cities. To the kids in these areas, this only backs up the idea that the enemy is society. Another indicator of juvenile crime is fatherless children. In the United States we see fathers as the ones who provide economic stability, act as role models, and alleviate the stress of mothers. Without a father, many young men have no one to turn to as a role model. About 50% of marriages in the US end in…

Childhood poverty is a growing issue in America as more and more children are living below poverty line of $22,050.00 a year for a family of four. Because of the recession we are in and dominant single parent families in the country, we have a rising rate of childhood poverty. Many times poverty leads to poor choices both in and out of school for these young kids, mainly because of the lack of accountability in the household. The main reasons that children of poverty turn to crime is a lack of parental supervision, higher unemployment rate and the poor role models the children have in the environment they grew up in.…
