A resume is a summary of one’s personal and professional record submitted to others with a specific purpose. It is also called Bio-data/Curriculum Vitae.

The Bio-data is an overall record of biological including family back ground. The Curriculum Vitae covers the details mostly of fresher’s. A Resume is the record of a job holder as a job seeker.

Not only a well-made resume is important for every entry-level job seeker but also it is more critical.

Job application basics:


i) Follow all instructions.

ii) Make sure your application is received on time.

iii) Include all documents in the one application.

iv) Include a resume in your application.

v) Customize each job application.


i) Don’t include written references in your application.

ii) Don’t assume your application has been received.

iii) Don’t be daunted if you lack some of the skills asked for.

iv) Don’t apply without getting all the facts.

v) Last but not least, find out why an application was un-successful.

Points to remember while making a resume for graduates seeking entry-level positions in industry:

1) Objective: The objective should be clear, well defined and short, not more than 10-12 words. It should be aimed towards getting a particular position in a specific industry. Thus, your objective should talk about:

i) The position wanted.

ii) The functional area.

iii) The industry wanted.

2) Summary: It is a good idea to include a summary of your skills after having mentioned your objective. The summary should consist of 4-5 specific points.

3) Educational Qualifications: It is important to include relevant educational and professional qualifications. Put your qualifications in reverse chronological order. i.e. the recent ones first followed by earlier ones.

4) Professional Experience:

i) An entry-level resume cannot complete with resumes of experienced workers in the area of work experience. But don’t forget to list internships, voluntary work and summer training that you have under taken.

ii) Professional resumes should include their work experience in reverse chronological order with recent ones followed by earlier ones. Here, mention the company, designation, role and duration.

5) Personal Information: It should contain name, date of birth, sex, martial status, contact information or address including mailing, e-mail and phone numbers.

6) Design: Follow a simple design, which gives maximum information in the minimum number of pages.

7) Word Usage: Language with clear expression and good grammar is the thumb rule. Never make the mistake of using long words just to impress the recruiter.

8) Check and Re-check: Check the facts, the grammar, and the spellings. One small mistake may cost you, your job.

Guidelines for writing Resume:

1) Determine your job search objective prior to writing the resume. Once you have determined your objective, you can structure the content of your resume around that objective.

2) Always value yourself by describing your years of hard earned education and experience.

3) Mention unique features without fail in your resume.

4) The purpose of your resume is to generate enough interest in an employer to contact you for an interview.

5) Use short sentences, bulleted rather than lengthy paragraphs.

6) Remember to put your telephone.

7) By using action words of power like “prepared, developed, monitored, achieved, equipped, controlled and presented”.

8) Put the strong and apt points first.

9) By using the key words listed in the advertisement to match the contents of your resume.

10) Use buzz words.
