What exactly is authority?? It is almost impossible to give a precise definition to this term. The word authority will denote different meanings in different contexts. It may be used as a word to express an idea of superior person or scholarly person. A father exercises authority in a family. In some context it could be said that a particular person is an authority in “say” classical music or modern art. A psychologist would say that the idea of ‘authority’ is born when a child becomes conscious of the world. Here it is mainly concerned with legal and political context and hence authority is indeed influence based on recognized knowledge or expertise. A man with authority regulates social behaviour by virtue of his capacity for reasoned elaboration, his capacity for giving convincing reasons for what he does or want other to do. In such a context media can be definitely be categorized in a powerful authoritative instrument. Lets examine the following examples:
