In Composing Gender by Rachel Groner and John F. O’Hara, there is the discussion of how society shapes gender and imposes gender roles on children, even before they are born, through simple things such as names and gender-themed baby showers. Many people think of anatomy equaling gender, however it is not that simple. Gender is more than just the boy and girl binary. It is the way that different toys are separated into “girl sections” which are typically all pink and “boy sections” which are typically blue. From an early age, society separates boys and girls by gendering things such as names and products. In 1972, there was an article published by Ms. Magazine, written by Lois Gould, about how it is always a battle for a child to not fall into stereotypical gender roles. Her idea for an experiment of raising an androgynous child could change the way society sees gender, if it were to ever be carried out. It made me…

In conclusion, portraying gender stereotypes in occupational roles, behaviors, and gendered clothing throughout Berenstain Bears picture books can potentially lead to negative development in young children. With this in mind, in an article “Gender Stereotypes in Children’s Books: Their Prevalence and Influence on Cognitive and Affective Development” by Sharyl Peterson, they discuss the effects of gender stereotypes on affective development and cognitive development that are present in children. In fact, Peterson mentions in his work that “picture-books provide children with role models and clear images that prescribe for the children what they can and should be like when they grow up” (Weitzman et al., 19). Comparatively, Berenstain Bears picture…

The “Rights of Man and of the Citizen” (1789) are, for women, arbitrary, innate, a document that speaks volumes in the silent exclusion of women. Women, in this document, are not accounted and therefore it must be assumed that women are not (at the time of printing) recognised as citizens and are without rights, at least the rights bestowed upon their brothers, fathers, sons and uncles. This blatant hierarchal placement of rights removes women from the public realm and their rights seemingly in to that of the private, the home, the woman’s domain where interestingly the role of the woman is still one of sub ordinance to men.…

This concept is a very simple one, but I feel like even subtle changes in how we present stories to children could really help to de-construct the current societal hierarchy and begin to create a mindset of equality from a childhood. When creating this project, I thought, “Wouldn’t it be great if we could affect how people (specifically females and males) act towards each other beginning from when they were children?” It’s awfully difficult to change someone’s mind when they have decades of life experience and set opinions under their belts, but children can still be shaped by what is presented to them. If they are presented with female-male equality, then hopefully that is what they will begin to recognize as true for them. It would be even more fantastic if somehow books with these sorts of themes would shape the parents and what themes and ideas they chose to present to their kids. Perhaps instead of choosing books with stereotypical gender inequality or gender characteristics, they would choose books with better representation of both boys and girls.…
