The term ethics has many nuances. It has been defined as “inquiry into the nature and grounds of morality where the term morality is taken to mean moral judgments, standards and rules of conduct.” Ethics has also been called the study and philosophy of human conduct, with an emphasis on determining right and wrong. “The study of the general nature of morals and of specific moral choices; moral philosophy; and the rules or standards governing the conduct of the members of a profession.” One difference between an ordinary decision and an ethical one lies in “the point where the accepted rules no longer serve, and the decision maker is faced with the responsibility for weighing values and reaching a judgment in a situation which is not quite the same as any he or she has faced before.”
What are the potential ethical issues faced by ACME Corp?
The potential ethical issues faced by ACME group, is linked to the fact that Frank as a salesman is offering bribes to Otis of Thermocare to secure sales. There is no doubt that there could be a problem if Thermocare becomes aware of these practices. At no point in time should the purchase of products be justified with what can be gained personally it however should be justified with quality of products and price structures. If Acme is competitive in their offerings then there wouldn’t be an issue with these kickbacks however, if kickbacks is against ACME’s code of ethics then this can be seen as an ethical issue. If on the other hand Thermocare has better options in terms of suppliers and Otis is only choosing ACME for the benefits that he can derive, then this becomes an ethical issue.
What should ACME do if there is a desire to make ethics a part of its core organizational values?
