RESEARCH PROPOSAL
Dementia-----In older people - Public Awareness and Early diagnosis in Leicester Abstract
Depression is a group of symptoms associated with specific brain disorders. There are numerous types of dementia the management of which will also vary. It may be described as a progressive and debilitating disease process resulting in an exponential decline in both physical and mental function. Diagnosis is most common in the aged population, particularly individuals over the age of 65 with the prevalence increasing as the age of the observed population increases. Mental faculties are deleteriously impacted including communication skills, language and memory with patients often living with a reduced quality of life. Depression tends to be a presenting symptom in dementia. A significant portion of the elderly population live in nursing or care homes, with some two thirds suffering from depression. A substantial number of dementia-related deaths occur every year. It has been suggested that by delaying the onset of dementia, the number of dementia-related deaths may be halved. Currently, no cure, medical or otherwise, has been located for dementia, with the mainstay of treatment focussing on early management and enhancing the quality of life. Early and timely diagnosis have been repeatedly identified as important parameters in ensuring that management is successful and quality of life is as secure as possible. The aim of this study is to assess knowledge, understanding and attitudes towards dementia in sampled populations, particularly the ability to recognise the early signs and symptoms in dementia. It is hoped that, by enhancing local knowledge, earlier diagnosis will be enabled,...
