1.1 AREA OF STUDY

AN ANALYSIS OF STRATEGIC MODELS FOR MANAGING SUPPLY CHAIN IN A RECESSIONARY ENVIRONMENT. (ZIMBABWEAN MANUFACTURING SECTOR) 2006 -2012

1.0 Introduction

The core problem or issue of the thesis is how the past and current supply chain models are failing to bring efficiency and solutions to inventory management in a recessionary environments like Zimbabwe. This researcher is going to investigate how and why the existing supply chain models are failing to address efficiencies and productivity in the manufacturing sector and as well as profitability and effectiveness of current strategic models in a recessionary environments like Zimbabwe. This study comprises of three main areas namely:

a) The industry strategic leadership gap in relation to strategic supply chain management models and inventory management models and, how these models are failing to fill the widening gap that currently exist in recessionary environments like in Zimbabwe.

b) the supply chain strategy formulation in the manufacturing sector versus the existing or convectional strategic models and aligning such factors as culture, economic factors, legislation, technological changes and innovation to enable adaptation or standardization of a fitting strategy to the Zimbabwean manufacturing sector context.

c) the meaning of recessionary environment in the manufacturing sectors’ perspective and how it has affected convectional strategic model for managing retail distribution, inventory management and prototype recessionary fit strategy implementation in Zimbabwe.

This three-pronged attach to the research problem is mainly perceived from the point of view of traditional or convectional strategic model for managing the supply chain and inventory management in the manufacturing sector in Zimbabwe. Stakeholders in this study attach includes, the manufacturing industries, as they aggregates raw materials, logistics, storage, value addition and processing before they supply the chain stores and exports. Other stakeholders such as the Consumer Council of Zimbabwe, Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries, captains of the industry, Zimbabwe Revenue Authority, Zimbabwe trade body, ZimTrade the Standard Association of Zimbabwe, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, employees of COMESA secretariat and Southern Africa Development Committee secretariat shall be interviewed and the management employees (of Unilever South East Africa, Spar Distribution Centre and its 53 branches nationwide, OK Zimbabwe Supermarkets with its 48 branches, TM Supermarkets with 38 branches with and Straitia Beverages Manufacturing) forms the population which shall be consulted in the survey.

In exploring the problem area I am going to use a cross section of the manufacturing sector by doing case studies for two different companies in the manufacturing sector who manufacture for local market and also exports to the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) , that is Unileaver South East Africa and Straitia Beverages Manufacturing.

1.1 Background to the Study

Zimbabwe is currently experiencing an economic recession that is quite close to economic downturn for almost ten consecutive or successive years, the national economy has...
