This is the report of our visit to the Yaba College of Technology, Yaba, Lagos State on the 22nd November, 2011. We met the Director of the Centre for Information Technology and Management [CITM] which is the institution’s ICT, Mr. I.K. Oyeyinka. He discussed the followings with us:

1. How the CITM [that is the ICT] operates

1. The Structure of the CITM

1. Bandwidth

1. Power Source for the Servers

THE CENTRE FOR INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND MANAGEMENT [CITM]

The Centre for Information Technology and Management [CITM], is the Institution’s Information Technology’s back bone. It is a department on its own which is headed by a Director, Mr. I.K. Oyeyinka. It has units under it, which are headed by various HODs.

It is responsible for the provision of Internet access for the Institution, the College Network, Student electronic administration, Staff Information Management systems, College Educational Portal, and the Online Students’ Result and Transcripts processing. The CITM has one policy, they do things themselves, they believe in capacity building and minimum consultancy.

The Centre provides a network that runs on the campus fibre Optic.

THE STRUCTURE OF THE CITM

The CITM is divided into Units that are headed by Head of Department. The Units are underlisted:

1. Hardware Systems and Training Department

1. Network and Web Services Department

1. Programmers Department

1. Information Processing Department

HARDWARE SYSTEMS AND TRAINING DEPARTMENT

This department is responsible for systems deployment, installation, repairs and maintenance of computer systems and all IT training.

NETWORK AND WEB SERVICES DEPARTMENT

This department is responsible for the deployment, installation and configuration of the campus network, both the local network [intranet] and the internet access. It is also responsible for the web services, such as; the institution’s college portal, all web application that runs on the campus.

This department is responsible for the design and development of software and web application on campus.

This department is responsible for students’ data collation, processing and dissemination on campus.

BANDWIDTH

The campus operates on a bandwidth of 10MB Downlink which is used, divided and managed between the whole campus, which has a large population – a staff capacity of 2,500 to mention a few and student of a size of more than 10,000. The Institution has a local network and the internet. Most of the jobs are done on the local network which is then uploaded to the internet – the institution’s website and college portal.

All members of staff [both academic and administrative], and students are on the Institution’s Internet access network which is controlled and managed by Mikrotik Routers [the routers are at every terminals or section, to give access and authenticate users to the main internet gateway on campus], this is so, for the fact that the institution is on wired [fibre optic] and not on wireless [Wi-Fi]. Hence, there is a portion of the bandwidth that is separately allocated the students and another portion allocated to the members of staff as well, out of the 10MB Bandwidth. 2MB is dedicated the Institution’s website and College Portal.

At no time is the servers short down except the batteries run down, which the reason for going for dual is charging. He noted that servers were not designed to be short down and restart, they were designed to work continuously and that incessant short downs always damage servers....
