ABSTRACT
This survey study was conducted in Lahore. This research was designed to assess the dietary intake and adequacy of nutritional intake of people residing in selected old homes of Lahore. Two old homes were selected for obtaining a sample of thirty old people.
A questionnaire survey was adopted in order to collect the required data. There was an age limit of sixty to seventy five years for findings of research from both sexes.
A result indicates that people had poor dietary intake and administration of those institutions are less aware regarding the nutritional requirements of old age.
INTRODUCTION
Good nutrition and diet is the corner stone for survival, health and development for current and succeeding generations.
As Pakistan is progressing, it needs people with healthy minds and healthy bodies. In spite of this however, nutrition remains one of the most often neglected corner stone of our basic health system. Pakistan is a developing country with limited food resources and weak economic infrastructure. It faces the problems of meeting the nutritional needs of its vast population of seven hundred million. In such a situation, the most neglected part of our society is older adults.
Some unfortunate stereotype about older persons exist in all segments of our society: they are set in their ways lonely, sick, poor, handicapped, no longer able to contribute to the society, senile, living in nursing homes and so on. Although some of these characteristics apply to millions of older persons, they are not descriptive of most of the older persons. The elderly who have lived sixty, seventy or eighty years have been molded by their heredity, health, family, education, occupation and numerous social, economic and cultural factors. With the passage of time, they have become increasingly complex individuals and they make up a highly heterogeneous population.
