Ref: King Lear’s deteorating mental and physical health
Dear Dr. Nadaraja,
I am a clinical psychologist studying the effects of traumatic experiences King Lear is going through. I’m submitting a detailed report of my findings and hope your organization would be able to help for his medical and therapy treatments. King Lear is an 80 year old ruler of ancient Britain. He is a head strong old man and decides he will retire from the throne and divide his kingdom among his three daughters- Goneril, Regan and Cordelia. He is blind to his weakness and misjudges, believing that the two evil daughters have his best interests at heart and that his good and selfless daughter opposes him. King, openly declares that the daughter who loves him the most will receive the biggest share of his property. Then he will live with each daughter in turn for one month at a time. For instance, Goneril declares ‘’Sir I love you more than words..(1.1 39-45). King has shown great expressions that takes place within the human mind. He also offers to help his Fool before thinking of himself. Lear makes a very good observation about what it is that people really need. When he was powerful and safe inside his palace, he had no reason to concern himself with life’s essentials. He has shown fascinating exploration of flattery, self-love and the relationships between a father and his daughters. It was absurd for me to believe that King would divide his kingdom according to professions of love. Well, some people have claimed that being exposed in raging stormy night without any protection and with only Fool for company may have caused a physical illness, which results in delirium. The storm on the heath is representative of the storm raging inside Lear’s head. He is trying to make sense of the altered state of his world and thus suffering...
