Executive Summary
India is no stranger to luxury. As a nation, we have always had a deep-rooted association with luxury. India’s erstwhile Maharajas were connoisseurs of the good life. Their lavish lifestyles and opulent habits are legendary. How they lived their lives is impossible to imagine even today. They truly lived life king-size. Today’s corporate czars, with all their wealth, cannot hold a candle to erstwhile royalty when it comes to leading lives of luxury.
It is this association with luxury that led me to explore India’s new found affair with international luxury. Will this be another long lasting relationship or will the passion fizzle out soon enough, is what this dissertation attempts to unravel.
The research is directed towards unravelling the mindset of the Indian luxury consumers and the luxury retail preferences of these consumers. Luxury retail in India is currently going through an upheaval stage, with the retail address shifting from Five star Hotels to new luxury malls. These luxury malls, although a familiar construct in the West and the rest of Asia, are new to India and it remains to be seen whether they find acceptance and success here.
