Renaissance Comparison

Renaissance is a French word which its meaning is ‘rebirth”. It came from those people who thought of the Middle Ages as a very dark time and from which the human spirit needed to be awakened. The Renaissance was a cultural movement that spread roughly between the 14th and 17th century. The Italian and northern Europe’s Renaissance’s were both style and belief advancements, however there were differences as well as similarities as far as culture, social, and artistic relationships are involved.
    Firstly, one social and culture similarity between the Italian and northern Renaissance was that both had focused on religious meanings in their artworks. The artwork was chosen with Christian stories and figures as predominant artistic themes (Art History, Renaissance Art in Northern Europe, 2009). Italian and northern European Renaissance’s both also used the guild system which was a created system to teach a man the best way to learn a craft whether it be painting, sculpture, or another trade (Bukisa, Italy and Northern Europe: Similarities and Contrast Between the two Renaissances, 2010). This training of an artist’s selection was long, rigorous, and consisted of a sequel of steps that would leave the artist with a masterpiece that would have to gain acceptance into a Guild. Both the northern European renaissances were devoted to the church and had much dignity of man.
    There were social and cultural differences of the Italian and northern European renaissances as well as similarities. A significant difference was language. Italian humanists turned Latin and Greek while the northerners began to write in the vernacular, creating literature that was widely accessible (Doc Share, Comparison Between Italian and Northern Renaissance Art, 2010).
