1. Introduction In architectural history there is a constant tugwar going on between ‘function’ and ‘aesthetics’, periods in which almost art-like architecture flourishes are interrupted by periods in which decoration is seen as a sin and ‘form-follows-function’ is the common motto. Nowadays architects are being labelled an ‘aesthetic’ or a ‘functionalist’ and even label themselfs that way.

But doesn’t every building have a function? And isn’t the merging of function and aesthetics what architecture is all about? This age-old dilemma can be linked to one of the more recent dilemmas in architecture. The period of industrialisation is behind us and has left us with former industrial buildings scattered throughout the landscape. Questions arise about their aesthetical value and thus about the preservation of these so called ‘industrial monsters’. The joining point of these two architectural dilemmas is where answers can be found. If aesthetics can be found in buildings created as if they were machines, and these aesthetics might even have a direct relationship to this functionality, then maybe we can all agree on the correlation of function and aesthetics in architecture and on the importance of preservation of these...
