REL 212 Assignment 2
I was raised in a Roman Catholic family who adhered to the doctrines and traditions of this faith. As a child, I was baptized and received first Holy Communion and Confirmation. As an adult, I stayed true to the Catholic doctrine by marrying within the church and having my infant son baptized. Due to this upbringing, I find myself struggling to understand how others do not believe in God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.
Because of this is internal struggle to understand the absence of God in someone’s life, I decided to conduct my field research on Atheism. I wanted to gain insight into what I perceive to be a totally different perspective on religion without God as the core component of a person’s belief system. When something is bothering me or someone I love is in trouble or hurting, I gain my strength to endure and to provide support by turning to prayer. I believe that the power of this faith is what gets me through these difficult times.
As I undertook this assignment, I found myself wondering more about people who profess Atheism than I did about others who have a faith tradition to guide their daily lives and to lean on in times of trouble. For instance, if Atheists do not believe in God, what gets them through hard times? This is a central question I set out to answer in my field research. I also truly wanted to hear what Atheists wish non-Atheist would understand about them. This project really brought things into reality for me.
Discuss any misconceptions you had about the religion you researched. When I began this study, I did not know much about the Atheism. The only thing I knew was that Atheists do not believe in God. Because I had little insight into Atheism and did not have any real misconceptions, I watched a web cast and interviewed friends who were both Atheist and non-Atheist. “Atheism is the lack of belief in a deity, which implies that nothing exists but natural phenomena (matter), that thought is a property or function of

According to Norris & Inglehart, through the practice of atheism, atheists believe that religion is just a fallacy that might have developed in the past and passed on from generation to generation through the various teachings in culture (2011). For enthusiasts, the reason people are afraid to question religious teachings is because of the fear of repercussions that are likely to occur due to such disbelief. Under this context, religion was assumed to be a creation of scholarly studies in the past with philosophers trying to establish how religion came into being. The major question is what religion is all about and what entails the aspects of it.…

In his 1968 article, On Being an Atheist, H.J. McCloskey attempts to refute the arguments of God’s existence and explain how “atheism is a much more comfortable belief than theism.” (McCloskey 1968) He first attempts to discredit the Cosmological and Teleological arguments for God’s existence, then he turns to the existence of evil as “proof” that God does not exist, and finally closes his article back where he began- claiming that atheism is a more comforting belief than theism. Here I intend to explain how McCloskey is incorrect in his arguments and beliefs.…

Australian Philosopher and atheist, H.J. McCloskey published an article titled “On Being an Atheist” in 1968. In this article he offers arguments and what he refers to as “proofs” that a theists’ beliefs in an omnipotent, omniscient God should be disregarded. McCloskey bases his article on the Cosmological argument, the Teleological argument, on the problem of evil and ends his writing discussing why he claims that being an atheist offers more comfort than a theist has from a belief in God. This response will argue the truth and validity of the claims that McCloskey attempts to disprove in his article and will offer an argument to disprove that atheism is comforting.…

It is difficult to mount an affirmative defense of atheism without sounding as self-righteous as religious zealots quoting scripture. But you can, at least, acknowledge what atheism is not: It is not inherently nihilistic, as many believe; it does not deprive you of moral standards or instincts.…

Atheism is steadily growing in America. From 2005 – 2012 the number of people who call themselves atheist has increased from 1% to 5% while the number of people who say they are religions has dropped from 73% to 60%. Faith and religion. With so many religion and ways to view faith, it is difficult to see how we should understand them. This essay will compare two different ways to view religion in the form of analyzing two works. First, Bertrand Russell’s Why I am not a Christian explains straight forward way of thinking where if reason fails, then it cannot be. Terry Eagleton’s Reason, Faith and Revolution views religion and faith in more spiritual way. He explains that faith is deeper than reason. Both of these views will come short and it is actually combination of these that is the correct view of faith and religion.…

Can any scientist tell us how the Universe came into existence? Or, how old it is? There are creatures on Earth that are still being discovered today! Perhaps, one could look at the beauty in a sunrise or sunset. Perhaps, one could believe in God when they watch their new born babies eye lashes grow over the course of a week after they’re born; it is truly amazing! God created all things with such imagination and carefulness-each living thing is amazingly unique and has a purpose on this Earth no matter how big or small that purpose may be. In my opinion, Atheism is a belief that doesn’t leave much to look forward to. Though, it may be hard to explain God’s existence because he cannot be physically seen or heard, it shouldn’t be so hard to believe that the human race was created for purpose; one that exceeds this life on…

When Josh’s fellow student begins writing the words “God is Dead” on a piece of paper. Josh found himself in confusion for having to choose between his faith and his future life. He refused to obey the instruction causing the annoyance of his professor. Radisson gave him a disheartening task.
