Registered nurses (RN) represent the largest healthcare occupation, with 2.6 million jobs. To become a registered nurse there are three typical paths: an associate degree, a bachelor’s degree, or a diploma from an approved nursing program (advanced practice nurses such as nurse practitioners and nurse anesthetists need a master’s degree).
The nature of work for a registered nurse, regardless of specialty is to educate patients and the public about various medical conditions, treat patients, and also top, offer emotional support to patients and their family members. Registered nurses are responsible for recording patient medical histories and helping with diagnostic tests and analyzing results. RN’s can administer medication and aid with patient rehabilitation. In caring for patients, RN’s establish a care plan. These plans include several activities, such as starting, maintaining, and discontinuing intravenous lines (IV) for fluid, blood, and blood products. They can monitor the patient and record their observations, administer medication, and importantly check dosages and avoid difficulties with patient medication. Registered nurses with advanced education and training may perform therapeutic and diagnostic procedures; they may also maintain prescriptive authority.
