My friends, my family are all around me. Are yours? Yes well then we know that we are lucky. Imagine waking up one morning and all of your friends have died. That’s what life is often like as a child soldier. Raise your hand if you have a Brother, Sister, or best friend who is under 18. Those of you that raised your hand can you imagine them running around with a gun in hand shooting people? Well it could very well be one day, or it may even be you.
A child soldier is someone who is under the age of 18. Who is recruited by a state or non-state armed group and used as fighters, cooks, suicide bombers, human shields, messengers, spies or for sexual purposes. Some of them don’t seem so bad right a cook a messenger not that bad. But they are still on the front line. A messenger often runs across the middle of the battle field. Or a cook the kitchen may be blown up by a bomb.
Can you imagine back to the age of about 7 or 8. Running around with your friends playing chasey having fun at the playground. That seemed normal that was your everyday life activities. Well while you and I were doing that there were children all over the world running around with guns at war watching some of their fiends drop dead beside them. Girls imagine being dragged away from your family and friends and given to a male soldier as a sex slave sounds ridiculous and false right? Well unfortunately it is real. Many of the girls that are used for sex slaves end up pregnant or having a sexually transmitted disease of then not very long after they have been given to a male.
In the last 13 years, the use of child soldiers has spread to almost every region of the world and to every armed conflict. Though an exact number of child soldiers is impossible to define.
Child soldiers are more likely to come from places in third world countries and those living in poverty. Some are forced in and others voluntarily join because they are lead to believe that they will get fed, get paid and have an
