Reflective Essay
Have you ever felt as if the world is coming to end or as if the world itself was falling upon your shoulders? Sometime in life, we eventually fall and feel as if there wasn’t a reason to live or to breathe. That’s how I felt when I fractured my right ankle, my fibula to be exact. It fractured in three places and that was by far one of the most overwhelming experiences in my life. I was depressed for weeks, sad for most of the time I was on crutches. The reason why I was like this is because soccer is my passion. I was just weeks away from a tournament called National Cup. I was going to travel playing against the most skilled clubs around the U.S and I was going to play with one of the best clubs in California, The Aztec Juventus FC. The flight, food, and hotel were all paid for. University scouts were going to go see us play in Colorado, but because of that incident I had to pass up the opportunity and stay home and rest my ankle.
I still remember the day and date when I fractured my ankle. It was October 19th, 2008,on a Sunday afternoon. I was sitting on my couch like a potato watching television when my friend called me up. He asked if I wanted to go play soccer with some of his neighbors. I told him I didn’t really feel like it, but he kept on insisting. Eventually he convinced me to do so; the whole time I was playing I wasn’t feeling ok. Every time I had the ball I just fooled around. I wasn’t taking the game seriously, when all of a sudden I took a sprint heading towards the goal. I asked for the ball and they gave it to me. There was one defender left to beat, and in my mind I thought, “What the heck I’ll humiliate this guy and score.” So I did, but it was a huge mistake because the guy was about 6 feet tall, a 260 pound Marine! When I passed him he quickly caught up to me, slid for the ball, and unfortunately caught my ankle along with it.
I was on the floor in less than a second... [continues]
