Attitudes are a significant element in our lives. It is relatively stable of organizations of beliefs, feelings and behavior tendencies directed towards something or someone (Charles G Morris and Albert A Maistro, 2001).
Belief includes facts, opinion and our general knowledge towards something. Indeed, our beliefs are rooted in our upbringing since childhood. These beliefs serve as guidelines to have feelings such as love, hate, like and others. This feeling urge us to act in positive or negative ways towards the objects.
This story of butterflies by Patricia Grace had shown 2 major attitudes towards the butterfly between the teacher and the girl. The teacher, who form a positive attitude towards butterflies, belief that this creature is a beautiful, flying in the sun, visiting colourful flowers and should not be killed, however the girl who form a negative attitudes towards butterflies believe this animal merely a harmful insects who ruin the crops of her grandfather and it should be killed.
The girl forms a negative belief about the butterflies due to her upbringing since childhood with her grandparents who farm cabbages. The butterflies, for the farmer, are pests. It is very hard for farmer to get rid of them.
The different point of view between the teacher and the girl, emerge due to different upbringing, life experience and social background. The teacher does not see the harmful of butterflies in the lens of the farmer.
Indeed the wise grandfather always asks his granddaughter to do what her teacher says. He did not argue about the teacher’s opinion but he softly tells the granddaughter that the teacher buy all her cabbage from the supermarket.
In the educational field, the teacher may see the punishment is a good mechanism in order to discipline the pupils but for others, it is an unlawful and bad treatment of pupils.
