Reflections from a Missions Trip
Nakisha Kinlaw RN
Guatemala Reflection 2013

Working in a foreign land can be quite overwhelming for someone that has never been. However leaving my comfort zone and being blessed to impact the lives of over 1300 people, was one of the best decisions I have ever made next to giving my life to Jesus Christ my Lord and savior. When Dr. Goodman presented this opportunity in class last fall I knew right away that I was going. I decided to venture out and use my skills to serve others. The NGO’s that we collaborated with during this trip did a phenomenal job with having everything organized, planned, and staffed accordingly to ensure that my colleagues and I had what we needed to compassionately give fully of our selves and skill sets. My colleagues and I all came from different backgrounds in nursing but the core attribute that linked us all together was CARING. Caring enough about someone or something else enough to be an agent of change. Caring enough about the cause and vision of other NGO’s that we made our time their time. Caring enough about making a difference that the possibility of being under-qualified to meet the needs of the Guatemalan people was no longer a factor. My confidence as a nurse practitioner student increased 100 fold, as I applied the knowledge and skills I have attained thus far, as I provided medical care.

Additionally, I have been blessed with outstanding professors who truly possess a heart of caring and compassion, not to mention they are also “WICKED SMART”. I am so honored to be under the tutelage of Dr. Goodman as well as Dr. Palma. Bearing witness to their patience, meticulous attention to detail, skills, poise, professionalism, natural gift of servant-hood, and genuine concern for the well being of others gave me so much to aspire to as a future nursing leader. To our host NGO’s,“WINGS (Jesse & Sue Patterson)”, “COMMON HOPE (Lauren & staff)”, “PEOPLE FOR GUETEMALA (Ken & Lois)”, “RON ESPARANZA” and “FAITH IN

Growing up in Thailand has significantly influenced my desire to care for others. I have seen all various kinds of people struggle with poverty throughout my life, like infants, children, elderly people and even disabled people. Everyday I would see them on the streets whenever I see them I felt a strong desire to help them. As such in order to utilize this tendency I feel nursing is truly the right profession for me.…

When I was in the eighth grade I went on a weeklong mission trip with my youth group to Houston, Texas. This trip was a turning point in my life spiritually and mentally, completely changing my thought process of inner city missions at the time. There is a ministry there called CSM that invites youth groups to come and they will take the group to certain places in the city where they can serve and get a feel for the need there and many places. This trip was very impacting for me and I am still looking back on it and realizing the benefits.…

During a two week mission trip to Trujillo, Peru I volunteered in a medical clinic. My life purpose; becoming a nurse, was revealed to me while comforting children with distended abdomens due to malnutrition and contaminated water, as well as elders with crippling Rheumatoid Arthritis. This heartbreaking experience, gave me a cultured view of global healthcare needs. My goal as a nurse is to bring joy and comfort to patients. A girl from my highschool was diagnosed with stage 4 Rhabdomyosarcoma at age 14 and throughout her treatment, she spoke so highly of the nurses that made an impact in her short life. I wish to provide this kind of meaningful compassion to a patient one day.…

Spending time in clinicals with this woman in particular, helping her with her daily routine as well as getting to know her on a personal level developed a bond I will never forget. This woman, 96 years young, was full of wisdom and didn’t hesitate to share it all with me. Through this experience I learned what it meant to be a health care provider and truly care for the person I was helping, even when I had never met them before. I’ll never forget the last day of my clinical rotations as I stopped by for a final goodbye to each of the patients I had helped care for and their reactions. Everyone I had helped was more than grateful for my time spent with them, but Beatrice, my last stop before leaving Toledo hospital, broke into tears telling me how I was the hardest worker she had ever had and how much she would miss our time together. It was that moment that I realized this is want I needed to do with my life and that making a difference in someone’s life through healthcare would be the ultimate high.…

Growing up in a house hold of medical personnel, such as my mother and my aunt and other close relatives has really inspired me to become a Nurse Practitioner, but most of all my inspiration has come due to the death of my father. I want to help patients who may have false hope, who may think that there’s nothing anyone can do, I want to give patients hope, and I will devote my life to make a difference in the medical field. Although it won’t be easy, I know there will be obstacles I have to overcome, I think anything is possible if you persevere and if you commit yourself to do something that you love. At the end of the day you made at least one person’s life more enjoyable and filled them with hope, that’s what I’ll be thinking every night before I lay my head on my pillow.…

Leadership is the inspiration for desired response and getting work done through others (Tomey, 2009). The person, I have chosen to take part in helping me to do the interview, is T.E. She is a 30 year old African America. T.E. was born in Kingston, Jamaica on January 18, 1984 and lived there until she was ten years old. She grew up in poverty in an underserved community and suffered abuse at the hands of her stepfather. When she was ten years old her family moved to the United States to escape the poverty and ill treatment T.E. (personal communication, January 6, 2015). T.E. was able to overcome the abuse she suffered as a child. She developed into a productive citizen of society. She was able to channel the pain she suffered as a child into becoming a nurturer and caregiver to help those in need. She worked in an underserved community as a means of giving back to the community and served the underserved aggregate. I had the pleasure of working with T.E. for five years. I have watched her career advancement over these years and discovered that she is a wonderful co-worker and friend. She has been a registered nurse (RN) for ten years. She started her nursing career in telemetry at Martin Luther King Jr. hospital in South Central Los Angeles working as a float pool traveler for two years. After leaving telemetry, she worked the emergency room for three years at Centinela Hospital Medical Center (CHMC). Her next RN role was house supervisor for three years at CHMC. Now she is the director of the infection control and the wound care departments. She also works as the assistant professor at Charles Drew. She graduated with her doctorate in nursing (DNP), Practice and Nurse practitioner primary care/gerontology degree. This interview is a summary of T.E.’s viewpoints on her leadership style, changes made because of…

Hello everyone, My name is John Santiesteban and I’m currently a nurse. I am attending this class in order for me to achieve my masters in nursing. My enthusiasm for nursing first took root and flourished after losing my father. My father became very ill and needed medical care. When I saw that my father was starting to become weak and frail, I thought to myself "What access would my father have to good quality health care?" I asked my mother "Where is the nearest hospital?" and my mother replied, "It's about twenty miles away child." It was from that moment on I began to realize a desire to engage in a profession that focused on the area of helping sick people. After losing my father I made the initiative to start a new direction in my life to pursue a career in healthcare. So I decided to become a surgical tech to test my interest. After completing my certification, I was able to do a lot of hands-on work with sick…

As long as I can remember I have always loved to learn new things. When I began my journey back in 2005 to pursue a degree I wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted to focus on. What I found amazing was shortly after starting college my love for learning grew exponentially. Today nearly 10 years later I am close to realizing my goal of earning a bachelor’s degree in nursing. When I reflect on how much I have learned over this past year I am so grateful for the learning opportunities that the Bachelors of Science in Nursing at Western Governor University has brought to my life and to my career as a Registered Nurse. The artifacts in my portfolio are the evidence that my program of study has prepared me to be proficient in such areas of professional nursing as, patient safety, nursing research, evidence-base practice, quality of care, effective leadership, and community health. My Leadership Practicum enabled me to discover a healthcare concern on the unit that I work on. In collaboration with team members, we were able to come up with successful solutions that were supported by evidence based research. My Community Health and Population Practicum course required me to broaden my communication skills with others. This course brought me the knowledge and experience that I needed to be proficient in communicating with patients, colleagues, and professionals in the community.…

My name is Hannah Atakorah. I am a currently enrolled in the Family Nurse Practitioner program at Columbus State University. I was born and raised in Accra, Ghana, where there are not many hospitals or nurses to provide the much needed medical care for sick people. Education has always been an essential aspect of my life, but growing up in a single home in Africa did not make it easy. I was exposed to the medical field at an early age because I was fortunate enough to participate in a clinical volunteering program held in the city where I lived in Ghana which gave me a life changing experience. During that period of time, I was able to recognize how nurses are the most important people in the health care field. The sacrifices they make to give an individual top quality care are what make nurses phenomenal people.…

Realization. This is what I learned from the readings. The realization that I am not as culturally aware as I thought. I have always considered myself to be a good nurse. I try to be very thoughtful and caring with my patients. I smile as I interview them, place my hand on their arm or shoulder, and try to find a common ground. This is because as an operating room nurse we don 't get long to connect with our patients before they are off to sleep. Working in central and eastern Kentucky and also growing up here, most of my patients are what I call "Appalachian Americans".…

This past summer I volunteered to go on a mission trip to a small town on the west side of Tennessee, called Somerville. Although it isn’t traditionally a “deep south” state, this city more than fit the culture. Everyone we met had a heavy accent, drank sweet tea, ate biscuits, and went to church multiple times a week. When my group first arrived at our “resident’s” house, I wasn’t exactly pleasantly surprised. I was surprised not by the fact that she lived in a trailer home or that there was mold growing down her bathroom wall, but by how she greeted us. She was less than friendly. It could be she was embarrassed that she needed help or that she just didn’t want strangers in her house but I felt a little hurt. Every day we invited her to have lunch with us but she never accepted. I am so used to people being overly friendly because I come from a tight-knit community. When she did come out of her room and we had a chance to talk with her, she was cold and hard to relate to. Overall, I was disappointed with the experience.…
