Introduction to Child and Youth Worker
CYWP 112

What I like thus far in the introduction to child and youth worker course is that I find the professor easy to understand. I don’t find myself having to ask her to repeat herself or ask her to further elaborate on a topic. She states something, than further elaborates on the topic ensuring that we fully understand. I also like that she teaches to cater to every learning style. Reading, group work, power points and conversation like lectures. What I find to be the most helpful for myself is the conversation like lectures, where she compares course material to real life situations. There isn’t anything I dislike about this course thus far; everything seems to be straight forward.
What I would like to see differently to enhance my ability to learn would be to have more group actives with classmates. I like to hear others opinions and point of views, I also like to hear what others think of my thoughts and having small group discussions. It allows me to step back and look and things from a different perspective, and not be so one way minded.
From attending this class I have realized that I am very empathic, and self-driven, I think these will be great chararistics to bring to the child and youth worker field. With that I have also realized which areas I need to work on that might prevent me from being the best child and youth worker I can be. At times I can be quite, keep to myself, not voice my opinion or even if certain topics are brought up I may shut down all together. In order to resolve these issues I would have to be willing to talk to someone in regards to my problems, seek help in the form of a counsellor, or social worker and meet with them on a regular basis to resolve my person issues. There for when I begin working as a child and youth working I’m not distracted by what’s going on in my personal life. I think I will seek help for

As expected my knowledge did grow. The first thing we really looked into in the class was the qualifications of being a childcare provider. The next thing we learned in the class was child brain and physical development. We covered how brain and physical development is one of the most important factors in child development because it affects the child for the rest of life. Damage to certain parts of the brain can dramatically affect a child for the rest of life. Attention is one of the most important factors in a child’s brain development because attention changes how the brain responds to actions around the child. If a child is born with or develops eye problems, it is recommended to have those corrected because they can affect learning and attention abilities in young children (Benson). Parents can help encourage a child’s physical development by allowing them room to explore by providing push-pull toys and reading or singing to them, allowing them to join along (Longo). As the class went on we started learning about safety in childcare centers. Most of the rules and guidelines seemed like common sense. For example, teachers and volunteers must be free from illness, smoking is not allowed on the premises, and open windows must have a screen (Department of Children and Families). After the class I learned how to overcome anxiety by practicing what I needed to practice and by believing in myself with the knowledge that I had…

    1) My main motivation for undertaking this course is to gain a qualification that will provide me with options into further educational opportunities that I hope will ultimately open doors into pursuing a career working in schools. I discovered my passion for working with children and young adults during my time as an adult instructor in the army cadets and found it to be very rewarding but never found the right time to switch careers. Following the birth of my son, I made the decision to leave work and the army cadet force to be a full time mum and whilst I do not regret my decision in the slightest I do feel as though my life was put on hold. I am now lucky enough that I can take advantage of this opportunity to retrain in a subject that am passionate about and that will hopefully lead me to a career working with children. Apart from the qualification I intend to acquire as much experience and knowledge as I can whilst on placement in the classroom and develop new skills in communicating with children. I also aim to broaden my knowledge of child development and schools as an organisation from the course and my peers.…
