History
The history of Indian television dates back to 1959 when Doordarshan was launched as the National television network.
In 1991 opening and liberalization of India economy lead to the influx of foreign channels like Star TV and domestic channels like Sun TV and Zee TV.
In 1992 Cable TV industry started. This lead to the emergence of MSO (Multi System Operators liaising between cables operators and Channels) who had heavy financial muscles to make capital investments. MSOs provide the feed to the local cable operators for a fee. The MSO industry has become highly monopolistic to warrant Government intervention to ensure a fair competition. Currently there are 6000 MSOs feeding to 60000 LCOs (Local Cable Operator).
Even with basic regulations in place the there were lot of distribution issues with Cable TV. The LCOs reported a lower number of connections where as the broadcasters demanded a higher rate. MSOs were finding it difficult to operate under these conditions. This lead to the amendment of Cable TV networks (Regulation) Act in 2002 to provide CAS (Conditional Access System). CAS (Conditional Access System) was rolled out starting from Chennai and parts of Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata.
In 2001 Government issued guidelines to operate DTH. Country’s first private DTH license was awarded to Dish TV in 2003 which started operations in 2004.
