Reading Response 2013
Name: Michael Champion
Title: What does it feel like?
Author: Michael Morpurgo
Text Type: Short Story
Date Read: 8/2/18

2) This story is about a young girl names Sofia, who lives in a village. One moment she was going to school, the next moment she is hiding in the toilets and watching soldiers, taking everything and burning everything in the village. A grieving solider comes into the toilet and finds Sofia in the toilet, and has compassion on her and tries to save her. She realises how fear can control people and sometimes it can affect them into helping someone.

3) I choose to read this short story because it seemed interesting and I also like the idea about the war, and your rights and freedom.

4) Sofia was screaming inside herself, “Don’t just stand there. Tell him he can’t do it. Stop him”. I found this quote interesting because it shows us what fear and control can do to some people. Sofia didn’t realise that if people did react, they would face consequences and most likely be shot dead. Sofia didn’t realise this because she was taught to fight for her country, rights and freedom.

5) Another interesting quote is “This is our village; she cried and you will never take it from us”. This quote showed us that, Mighty Martha stood up against unjust treatment even when she knew the consequences would be death. She sacrificed her own life, so they could be free and despite that the people were controlled by fear and were doing what the soldiers wanted them to do.

6) This text highlighted the idea that it is important to stand up for what’s right and also not let fear control you. Unfortunately fear gripped them and it was too late, to fight for their freedom. This is shown when Sofia is screaming inside herself telling them to do something and also when the cowboy solider asked the men, if they could call themselves men. This one of the many reason for fear, because they didn’t want to die.

7) This text made me realise how some people today

I am Peyton Farquhar a thirty-five-year-old planter. The short story "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" is about me. This story is about justice and my opinion about war. Justice and judgment were very important during the war, special to ordinary people. What I remembered about that days was standing on a platform, kind a hanging off the railroad bridge, then I saw some scene and I died at the end, by hanging off the Owl Creek Bridge.…

In, Waiting for Dan, the husband, Dan, leaves so he can go help fight segregation. Dan’s thought process had been inclined to do so by believing that “the threat of violence would send the wrong message” (7). He wanted to ride the Freedom buses because he thought it would help send a peaceful message, over a riot. In, A Letter Home, the narrator, Kara, was experiencing a riot at her school, which she thought was wrong, yet she wrote of her experience when the National Guard came to her school with rifles. “Violence is not the answer to these problems” (7). This was also including the Vietnam War of which many people at her school had been against including her, for which she did not see the point of why these people needed to use violence as a way to help solve…

“Don’t mistake my kindness for weakness”. Not a quote from To Kill a Mockingbird but very meaningful in the story. Especially towards one of the key main characters of the story, Atticus Finch. He shows an extraordinary amount of bravery by not fighting, but showing kindness against a violent and vehement opposition. To Kill a Mockingbird is about the courage not in fighting but in holding true to your word and showing kindness to those without it. Atticus (and others) are not weak for their kindness, they are actually the strongest characters in the entire…

It seems that the author compares men and women to “fighting and fleeing”: men being the fighters and women being the fleers. The author of the second excerpt is trying to influence the reader about the importance of “Sustained Silent Reading (SSR)” by noting the benefits of this strategy. The authors of the third excerpt support the idea of English expanding across the world, because it allows for mass communication with almost…

The author of, “Who Need Love!” Nicholas D. Kristof interviewed several married couples in Japan about their marriages. The answer was surprising; most of the couples in Japan are, by international standards, exceptionally incompatible. However the strength of the Japanese family is extremely higher than the ones in the U.S. The divorce rate in the U.S. is 55 percents, however the divorce rate in Japan is almost only half of U.S. 25 percents. One Japanese lady mentioned a secret of the strength of the Japanese family consists of three ingredients: low expectation, patience, and shame. They take patience is a virtue of a wife. According to the old Japanese lady wife cannot be mad at the husband even he is having affair with another woman. Another factor of low divorce rate is Japanese women with children often cannot afford living without the salary of her husband. Moreover, social pressures also keep the low divorce rate. Humphrys so troubled by the fact that the Oxford English Dictionary has removed the hyphen from thousands of words because he think that the author is trying to adapt to the new generation of writing as what he called fashion. Like shortening the word or using abbreviation as many people use on email and SMS. He thinks that this makes people care less in proper spelling and grammar. The reason for this change is because we are changing the way we communicate with each other and how our life is very busy therefore we need to make everything go faster. Humphrys think texters have changed the English language by using abbreviation for example; laugh out loud would be LOL, and also by using emoticon. He feels that text-speak is a bad thing because it's “ravaging” our English language. Even for him texting has made him slipping into sloppy habits, abandoning capital letters and using rows of dots.…

    My First Reading Response

I found the process of writing the reading responses quite tedious; especially when it came to my first reading response. My first reading response was focused on the article, “What Every American Should Know”; inquiring whether the use of Hirsch’s list to determine if one is culturally literate is well-thought-out. I found coming up with witty counterarguments tiring and difficult, the end result being I had to create an outline (which I barley do), to aid me in the development of this ‘blog post’. After creating the outline, I had little-to-no difficulty completing the rest of the reading response, since it clearly informed me of topics to discuss in each paragraph.…
